How long does a CDN background check take?

Hi Folks,

So there I was being offered a position by a company in Portland.......when the background check began...been a couple weeks now and thery are still waiting on my Canadian Criminal Background check I assume done by the RCMP....I can also assume that if it doesnt come back soon others are probably going to get the job..Any ideas on how long this usually takes..A third party firm is doing the background on behalf of the company...been a couple weeks easily by now...

Kevin, I know this will sound a bit callous but...

You live within one day's journey of the border; so, IMO it would be a good investment of time to make a trip to Vancouver and go to RCMP office directly for a walk-in cert--which you could then present to the employer.

2006/05/01 AOS Packet (I-485/I-131/I-765) filed at Chicago

2006/08/23 AP and EAD approved. Two down, 1.5 to go

2006/10/13 Pras' I-485 interview--APPROVED!

2006/10/27 Pras' conditional GC arrives -- .5 to go (2 yrs to Conditions Removal)

2008/07/21 I-751 (conditions removal) filed

2008/08/22 I-751 biometrics completed

2009/06/18 I-751 approved

2009/07/03 10-year GC received; last 0.5 done!

2009/07/23 Pras files N-400

2009/11/16 My 46TH birthday, Pras N-400 approved

2010/03/18 Pras' swear-in

Thanks but won't fly...they said the third party must do it..not me...and with a 10 month old baby..I really cant just head up to Vancouver for a certificate..Really....I just want to know if this is a normal time frame or has the paperwork been lost in the shuffle somewhere..

Unfortunately, it is quite normal for RCMP to go SNAFU when any other than walk-in request is made for background check.

I know the Winnipeg city police can turn out a background check quickly--which is done Canada wide, and they can mail you the results. Maybe pass that on to the HR section http://www.winnipeg.ca/police/BPR/info_req...m_record_search

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

When my RCMP certificatte was requested in January it was 120 days from beginning to end but that was a fingerprint check, the actual time it took was 79 days. Your circumstances being different, it being for employment the time could be much quicker. I hope you get good news very soon.

09/20/2006 - Sent I-129F

09/22/2006 - Received at NSC
09/28/2006 - NOA-1 (1-797C date )

10/02/2006 - Cheque cashed

10/02/2006 - NOA 1 (I-797C recieved in the mail)

12/08/2006 - NOA-2 in 79 days

12/13/2006 - NOA-2 hard copy recieved

12/26/2006 - Package recieved by NVC

12/30/2006 - Received by Montreal

01/22/2007 - Received Packet 3

04/16/2007 - Returned Packet 3

08/02/2007 - Received medical documentation

08/07/2007 - Received Interview date Aug. 9th

08/09/2007 - Received I-601 and 212 (not approved yet)

02/17/2008 - I-601 approved 212 abandoned

06/2?/2009 - New medical and passport and doc sent to Mtl

07/22/2009 - Recieved request for DS-221 and notarized letter of intent

07/31/2009 - Montreal recieves thier final requested doc.

09/01/2009 - Visa approved and mail out today
