Yeah, nejm is a medical and academic journal. Entertainment Tonight and Trump tweets, not so much.

The average person with Covid gets told to go quarantine at home until/unless they have difficulty breathing. The president got hospitalized and received the newest and best treatments possible after having mild symptoms. The treatment the president got has no bearing on the perspective of Covid-19 as it applies to anyone else.  Not until those treatments actually become available to everyone else.

I am just wondering where this anonymous NEJM editorial writer was when Nancy and DeBlasio were calling the President a xenophobe for curtailing travel from China, and the Dems in general were downplaying everything about Covid until it was supposedly too late.  Not very credible editorial in my view, but what does anyone expect when a medical journal starts to enter into the political arena.

They move ght say Because Trump is a danger to the public health in the case they laid out. They might ask why is the president interjecting politics, like masks,  into a public health debate?  You can never separate the two topics but in the case of covid-19 we entered new territory.

Same reason people here likewise use the identity of these people to put those biases on a pedestal, equate them with science. Raw power tends to not have the patience to appeal to reason so tends to take the most intellectually lazy way. Exhibit A, this case.

You'd think someone who has lost loved ones to covid might be a tad more... empathetic or understanding to someone who has the disease. Guess not.

I'm quite empathetic and understanding, which is why I understand and recognize that he hasn't beaten anything like some risen from the grave Lazarus or second coming of Christ, nor is he on death's door. He's quite simply still unwell, neither beaten anything nor 'cured' and his cheerleaders would be a lot more empathetic and caring if they realized that.

All the people I know who contracted covid, with the exception of one rather obese, unhealthy fella, once symptomatic, were already getting better within 3-5 days, and recovered promptly.  Let's revisit this in a few days and see where Trump is at, shall we?  I mean, it's been a week, and he's shown much improvement, so I'm pretty optimistic at this point.

Sick people don't usually go outside and make videos.

Did the individuals you know were given high doses of Dex? Did they have findings on their CT scans consistent with being infiltrated? I'm sure he's feeling a lot better than he was, because of the Dex alone. But he's certainly not better, when he arrived home he had severely labored breathing and was visually wincing in pain. He does not look well in any of these videos and is having breathing issues (some of them have been edited). He needs time and rest - you know, like normal people. He is an elderly individual with multiple co-morbidity.

Also normal people aren't the President and don't feel the need to go out and perform like a circus monkey to prove they are 'fine' when they are not, and are not typically surrounded by yes men that neither care one flying flip about him or will just do it for giggles. On a good day my dad can get around for short periods of time without his O2, even as he huffs and puffs and struggles, and refuses to listen to reason. Still, he has not recovered and is still infectious and should follow the protocol for the benefit of himself and others around him.

Nope on the Dex, which I realize you obviously already knew.  Some took mucinex DM.  Some took HCQ.  The ones who took HCQ seemed to recover more quickly, but that may have been due to earlier diagnosis, so hard to say.  Some still felt "bleh" after 10 days, some said they felt great by day 6 or 7 (can't remember all the details, sorry).  Only one person had symptoms that sound very similar to your dad (minus the O2, since he didn't have such) but he reported that walking from the kitchen to the living room took some time because he had to stop and catch his breath.  He was the worst, and that lasted a full 14 days before he started feeling better.

But all of them were considerably younger than Trump, so they had that going for them.  You say he's "certainly not better", yet Trump and his doctors claim he is.  (I'm going to file that under you having an opinion but not being a qualified medical professional just like the rest of us here.). Again, let's see what happens in the next few days.  He's certainly in a position to make himself worse if he DOESN'T rest and recover enough, and he's certainly the type of personality to do so in spite of the best medical advice.  Trump has a responsibility to show a strong face to the world, in order to protect our government that no covid victim you and I know does.

They are a medical journal and they are commenting on a medical situation that was mishandled politically. The point is they rarely get involved in politics, and yet the immediate defense is they are bashing Trump. The defense of Trump is getting cult like. We can come up with all the excuses and deflections in the world, but it is what it is. The administration handled Covid-19 poorly. In the end they have to own that.
