I cannot stress how important the instructions pages are. Not just for questions like this, but for other parts too. There is a whole lot of critical information of it. I remember my first draft was in blue ink! The slash is crucial. "NA" on it's own is a complete string of text and will probably be understood as such. Also note that you probably won't be able to type out N/A because of alphanumeric restrictions on most text fields. I wrote mine all out (like you, i left blanks if it was in the middle of a sections, but put N/A for each box in an entire section that did not apply) but someone here posted a good idea, to write out "N   A" with the space in the middle then do the slash by hand. The problem with this is that with the several pages and sections, you might miss one and end up submitting it without the slash.

 

I would just do them all by hand

I've read that lawyers buy "N/A" rubber stamps for this purpose.  My wife and I took turns handwriting "N/A" everywhere that was appropriate.  We didn't enter anything, not even N/A, in sections that are supposed to skipped if they don't apply, and all went well.
