Hi everyone! I submitted my AOS early August - with the delays in biometrics and just backlogs in general I don't see my EAD coming ANY time soon, so I have started looking into volunteering opportunities. However, this is proving harder than I thought! I have contacted several different organisations but lots of places can't accept volunteers without SSN (I guess for background checks and for tax reasons?).

I was wondering if anyone else is volunteering right now? What are you up to? I'd love ideas of who I can approach :)

Hope you're all keeping well!

Just an FYI there is a fine line between volunteering and work; you need to make sure you aren't compensated at any way (not just monetary). I would think more places are very wary of taking in volunteers at this time due to COVID. For example the hospital I work at has suspended their volunteer program since March and we have a HUGE program. You can try a local animal shelter- I imagine they do not do background checks. See if you can find any opportunities on your local United Way website. Anything working with children would require a background check so I would cross those off your list. Good luck.

Thank you! Absolutely, I know there's a thin line and I don't want to be near it! I just want to feel purpose in my day and contribute to something if that's possible. Animal shelter is a good idea.

Just to add, for anyone else interested. I spoke with the American Red Cross today - they will do background checks for people without SSN. There are a variety of volunteer positions and you can still ensure you are not compensated in any way!

My ex volunteered for the Red Cross when he first got here on a K1 and was waiting for AOS to finish up. No problems with AOS -- he disclosed it at the interview and I remember him saying it was one of the few bright spots of waiting around doing nothing.
