Hi everyone

I have a question about getting a driving permit in California without a SSN with AOS processing.

I just got turned away from the DMV because they advised that if I apply for a drivers license it will void my AOS application and I have to wait for my SSN.  This is the first I have heard about this.

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of issue?

Thanks so much 😊

I'm not in California but this smells bologna. I suggest googling the CA DMV and look at what their requirements are, if you haven't already. One negative of adjusting status is in many states you can not get a drivers license until you have status.

You must provide your SSN if one has been provided.

Not having a SSN is not an issue.

Start here, apparently you can now start your application online

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/

A drivers license application does not void an AOS. Ever!!!!!!!!!!

Or you can go for the AB60 route.

Do you have an EAD? You won't get a permit/licence in CA without one in my experience (except an AB60 which is far from ideal). This may be the underlying issue.

There are/were 3 options in California.

Real ID.
Always requires a minimum of EAD and SSN (This is a federal requirement not a state requirement)

Non Federal compliant ID
SSN is NOT required but must be provided if you have one plus I-797 Notice of action.

AB-60
No legal presence documents required.

The Non Federal compliant ID may no longer be available.

Actually, pending AOS is enough, even though most states will deny it.

SSN is also not required, if not eligible for one.

I was looking for that one but could not find it. In that case, CA appears to demand it (though their DMV site claims its a federal requirement). Though I seriously doubt there is a legal base for that.
