Are People Really Moving Out of L.A. in Droves Amid the Pandemic?

“At a societal level, fear is temporary,” he says. “After 9/11, there was fear of flight and predictions of outmigration from cities that never materialized. In the long run, the fundamental attractors of cities including education, culture, economic opportunity, and quality of life outweighed any fears.”

Rhie’s research appears to be supported by the available data. Bloomberg CityLab reports that, from March 11 to June 30, 2020, roughly the first three months of widespread pandemic, home moves in California were actually down 35 percent compared to the same time period in 2019. Once summer arrived, there has been some rebounding in the number of moves, but it’s not clear that it dramatically outpaces standard seasonal variations.

“It’s not unusual for [the summer] to be peak moving season,” Igor Popov, chief economist at Apartment List, told CityLab. “I think it was just a little bit more intense this summer, because of the nature of the pandemic, and the nature of shelter-in-place preceding high moving months.”

Further, there is not strong data to say that people who are moving amid pandemic are doing so permanently, and not simply intending to move back to their urban environs in the relatively near future.

California may be the Golden State, but it seems to be losing some of its shine for some people who are opting to pack up and move to other states.

For the seventh straight year, more people left California than moved in, according to new census data. More than 86,000 people left California for Texas, nearly 70,000 left for Arizona and about 55,000 left for Washington.

Did you read the article? It isn't about people moving out of one state to another. It's about people not abandoning cities en masse as some have been writing about on here. No need to shift the goalposts when you can start your own thread. :)

America is great -- plenty of room to find the place that suits us best.

Just posting facts. I am not aware of the bold part, but I am aware that CA has had a net loss of residents for years.  I haven't shifted a goal post at all.

The article is about people not leaving cities. You were writing about people leaving a state. Apples and oranges.

I'll find those "everyone is fleeing the urban hellscape for suburban bliss" posts post-shower. Time to start getting up.

Good choice! Isn't it great we get to make these choices for ourselves? I prefer cities. I grew up in a city that's pretty much a suburb of LA and couldn't wait to escape. I lived in the country for a bit in the UK and hated it -- hated the solitude, hated not being able to walk outside my door and have so much nearby. Even in the suburbs that was almost possible, just a slightly longer walk. Some people feed on the pulse of the city, and some don't. How boring it would be if we were all alike!

People are always leaving, people are always coming in. Cities aren't dying by and large, on the coasts at least -- and we are a largely urbanized nation, over 82%. That number just continues to grow, if slowly, but it grows. Now that isn't necessarily a good or a bad thing, it's really kind of neutral. But to dismiss cities as somehow not reflecting the reality of what America is, is to ignore the reality that we are an urban nation in terms of where our people actually live. https://www.statista.com/statistics/269967/urbanization-in-the-united-states/

According to BBC people are moving out of the cities in the UK.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

One of my good friends left her place in London and has been quarantining in Dorset for months. She's losing her mind now and questioning this decision! Apparently she is in agreement with Alex's 7 year old daughter that the place should be named "Boreset."

Well perhaps my post above was wrong, because now that you made me look deeper, this site claims the population has grown year over year, not declined every year for the past seven.  It really sucks that we need to fact check the fact checking sites that over see the fact checked data in order to only be right 50% of the time...

Census.gov data indicates growth year over year.  Sorry I posted incorrect NBC site.

I am always amazed how people describe an inanimate object like a city as being alive.  I just got back from hiking Badlands, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton NPs, those are alive with all kinds of nature, but even that land is inanimate.  However, to each their own, but leaving cities it is much more conducive to be distanced from others in this time of the Vid, so like wearing masks, moving out of cities is probably smart.

Good for you that you got to enjoy that rugged beauty!  I'm sure it was a nice break from the drag you have to endure back in the city.
