That's certainly a hallmark of the disease - my BiL progressed to not being able to breathe within hours. I think some people forget that he is a high risk individual, just like any of our parents or grandparents. Unlike many Americans though, he will receive excellent treatment at a good hospital.

The short answer is that other mask options are probably better than a single-layer neck gaiter in many situations, but a gaiter, even at a single thickness, is almost certainly better than nothing.

It is interesting since this is definitely a matter of opinion.  Every time I see Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer open their mouths they are lying.  Sure they do it with resolutely and they have a group of leftist media types that buy everything they are saying, but it is the same.  Then of course if you want to compare POTUSs, Obama and Bush were just as untruthful as Trump, but neither of them gave the press as much access as Trump.

Yeah, I went to MIT, not everything they say is correct, and the link you shared only offered opinion with no data, whereas the other study you apparently did not read offered actual data.  There is a simple solution, they can test each mask material per an ASTM or SAE standard for single pass efficiency.  The initial study you posted appears to somewhat accomplish this, but not in a standard method.  The simple fact is some masks are not up to it, but they all count.
