Going to the USA via Serbia?

Hi all - new here, Hoping someone can help.

 

my partner is American and I live in the UK. I have an approved ESTA and am looking at visiting for Serbia for 14+ days prior to taking a direct flight from Belgrade to JFK. Serbia is not on the banned list of countries - do you think this will be acceptable at customs to enter this way?
