A little advice: if your neighbor is blasting his bad 80s country music AGAIN...try blasting a little "Alles Aus Liebe" (a la DTH) out your window. Within seconds he will have the music turned off.

:)

Too bad he wouldn't understand it...but then again, how fortunate that he won't understand it....lol

I would play "Ich töte meinen Nachbarn und verprügle seine Leiche" by Die Kassierer. Or well, anything by them.

Hmmm... I don't know them. I'll have to get P to bring some when he comes next week :)

Get ready to learn some interesting German then. :P

If you are the easily offendable type, I wouldn't suggest it though. For example, here is a song listing from the back of their album 'Männer, Bomben, Satelliten'

Die Kassierer – Männer, Bomben, Satelliten

01. Ich bin faul

02. Das politische Lied

03. Partylöwe

04. Mein schöner Hodensack

05. Warum ich immer so traurig bin

06. Schnaps und Bier

07. Für Udo

08. Mein Gehirn, dein Gehirn

09. Arsch abwischen

10. How does it feel?

11. Das Lied vom Hass

12. Kuckuck!

13. Hoch den Rock, rein den Stock

14. Du hast geguckt

15. (Die Pisse) Der Harn von Rudi Carrell

16. Kommste mit ins Stadion

17. Meister aller Fotzen

18. Meine Interessen

19. Das schlimmste ist, wenn das Bier alle ist

20. Du läßt dich geh'n

21. Die Kassierer, was ist das eigentlich (Teil 2)?

Hi Jen,

sounds like your German is pretty good!

My husband speaks German quite good, too, but mostly due to needing it for work, also. He always complains that I don't speak enough German with him. Since I moved here, it feels strange for me to speak German with him - does not make any sense, I know.

We try real hard to speak more German, but as soon as the conversation gets deeper and more complicated, we switch to English.

As to customs and traditions, I guess there are lots of differences in the details. Like - being "engaged" isn't really fashionable in Germany anymore, bridal showers I had never heard of before, and the "Polterabend" wasn't anything my husband had a clue about.

Of course the different holidays are celebrated somewhat differently in the US and Germany, too.

Lots of new experiences for both of us along the way - fun!

Goodluck with your journey!

Well, I just joined the thread but I wish I would have known you while I lived in Eagan, MN for 4 years. My boyfriend also complained that I never teach him any German. They could have complained to each other then.

He has taught himself a little bit but I would have rather payed for a course than to sit down with him. I guess I am not very patient.

Did anyone ever try to bring back bread baking mixes from Germany? They have a lot more varieties there and I'll be in Germany next week. Soooo... I'm thinking about bringing some back, but I don't want to get into trouble at customs.

I had all kinds of salad dressing mixes (the powdery stuff) and chocolate, wine and candy with my last time, and it was no problem. I declared it and the customs officer joked why I didn't like local salad dressing. However, flour and seeds might be different.

Does anyone have any experience?

JundP, enjoy the visit! I'm sure you'll have a blast! And he will probably be glad to escape the s***t weather in Germany at the moment.

I have brought bread mixes back quite some times and never got into trouble. But I also noticed that Cub Foods (is this a Minnesota Company?) has a German section. They also sell pumpernickel, Sonnenblumenbrot and Roggenbrot. I also got Rotkohl and Kartoffelklösse.

Last time I went back I had a little carry-on and I was transporting at least 20kg of candy. I went to Selgros (a place where restaurants can buy their stuff) and bought those big packages of 200 pieces of Haribo Strawberries, Schlümpfe....( those I have learned are my boyfriend's and his family's favorite. Normally, the first package is empty after 2 days (you can see who ate them as the pimpels grow ;) ) Ritter Sport Rum is also a hit!

I have seen a lady who had to leave her suitcase full of candy at the airport. They wouldn't let her get through customs with all that due to the believ, she was going to sell it.

Well I brought tons of Nutella and chocolate, and they didn't mind. I ate myself though. :)

I bought Canadian Nutella at walmart and it takes pretty much like German nutella. Hurray, who would have thought Walmart is actually good for something for once.

Is this the bread that is good for one year? My husband saw the expiration date and wondered what they could have done to it that it would be good for an entire year.

From what I remember from school, Pumpernickel and the like are more cooked than baked, and this method makes it good for a long period of time. I remember buying some in Germany and the wrapping said it was good for almost a year without any preservatives.

What part of Germany? I came from Vilseck which is also in southern germany (bavaria)

As for cultural/customs/traditions changes ... I grew up in the US. I left back to Germany in 2002 and for me, adjusting to Germany again was a huge challenge.

Hallo everyone,

I am fairly new to VJ, and I am wondering about the other couples here who are German and American. Not wondering in a nosy way (well, ok, maybe a bit) but more just curious. I am the USC and my fiance is from southern Germany. He is fluent in English and I am...not fluent in German. I can say enough in German to have about a 10 minute conversation, but am desperately trying to learn more. Especially since my son is nearing fluency now (he's been studying it for 2 years). Language hasn't posed a problem for us since he speaks English fluently, but I was wondering if the other couples on here have a similar situation?

I was also curious if there are any customs or traditions that are new or different for the other couples?

Thanks for indulging me :)

~Jen
