So I was at the DMV today to get a license/permit because I just got my EAD/AP card last week and brought all docs and they were having a hard time processing it. Eventually the gentleman (higher up), came and tried to help the lady processing my papers and told me that Immigration doesn't seem to be "automatically approving" my card (EAD) and he said it's been an issue lately so he emailed immigration and told me to wait for a call....

Anybody tried getting their DL recently with only EAD and having the same problem? TY

CA

Quick Google search per the CA DMV.

DMV takes the privacy and security of our customer’s information seriously and has employed measures to ensure the electronic application is secure. If a customer has a Social Security number, the law requires them to provide it on their application.

YMMV

We had similar situation in Oklahoma. DPS ran the case through the SAVE https://www.uscis.gov/save/save-casecheck system and it couldn't verify legal status the first time. They told us to go back as they ran a 2nd and 3rd step verification inquires https://www.uscis.gov/save/about-save/save-verification-process each taking about 3 days to complete. We had to go back and forth to DPS 3 times on 3 different dates . Annoying and a big waste of time waiting in long lines at DPS but they finally got it right and got the DL. Best of Luck to you!

Yes definitely required or you must sign a statement  saying you don't  have one, it's  that way in Texas. I imagine similar in most states.

Depends on the state as others have said. You can push the issue in most states by educating yourself on the rules for that state. Basically you have to be smarter than a State employee( Not very hard really). Read all the requirements for the state, and print them out to bring with you. If you have the Physical EAD/AP card in hand, it trumps the save system, you are physically holding the immigration document, My wife went the day after EAD/AP was received, and her updated information was not in the save system ( Takes 2-3 weeks after card is issued sometimes), but any supervisor should know this. On the SS card side of things, if you applied for a SS Card they gave you a letter that said you have applied. They stamped this letter with a little official stamp, that shows you applied ( I have a copy of the letter somewhere I can upload for you, but It's all they give you at the office when you leave) this is proof that you have applied for the SS card, and will allow you to get your license pending the actual number showing up. All this depends on how much you you want the aggravation of dealing with the State you live in. If you don't enjoy conflict and the nightmare that most everyone behind the counter at most government agencies is on a powertrip thinking they control your life and can NEVER be wrong ( They had 2 weeks of training). The best option is to wait about a month for the SS card to show up, and the information to get into the SAVE system ( Should be about the time the SS card shows up).

I also tried to have my drive permit updated the next day when I received the combo card, and the officer said that they couldn't find my card info in the system, therefore she faxed the copy of combo card, passport, visa page and the approve letter to someone for approval, and called me three days later to come in again for the new permit. I guess the card must be too new to appear in the right place 😂 and I'm in Michigan

Hi thanks for those trying to be helpful. Yes my state processes the DL (ND) amd I've read the docs needed and EAD is one of the IDs thay can be used... even the "head" of the DMV knows about the system (he was the one who told me it could be done and just bring this and that) and I think it's the same as @qrk's situation where the SAVE doesn't verify.. the gentleman said it should've just done it automatically so he emailed USCIS and apparently it's been a 'recent' issue hence, i came here to ask if anybody else have had this issue... Thanks for the responses!
