Supreme Court will review Arizona ballot-harvesting law

Litigation began with Democrats saying the GOP-backed measure disenfranchised minorities

In January, a federal appeals court ruled that Arizona’s law banning so-called “ballot harvesting” violates the Voting Rights Act and the Constitution. Any further action has been stayed until the Supreme Court weighs in on the matter. Its new term begins next week.

The appeals court also found that Arizona's policy of discarding ballots if a voter went to the wrong precinct violates the law, arguing both measures have a discriminatory impact on minority voters

How else are we gonna buy votes if they don't let us harvest ballots amirite? Disenfranchisement!

Court Blocks Extension of Wisconsin Absentee Ballot Deadline

Quote

A federal appeals court on Thursday blocked a decision to extend the deadline for counting absentee ballots in battleground Wisconsin, in a win for Republicans who have fought attempts to expand voting across the country.

If the ruling stands, absentee ballots will have to be delivered to Wisconsin election clerks by 8 p.m. on Election Day if they are to be counted. Results of the presidential race in the pivotal swing state would be known within hours of polls closing.

Democrats almost certainly will appeal the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Under state law, absentee ballots are due in local clerks’ offices by 8 p.m. on election night, but Democrats and allied groups sued to extend the deadline after the April presidential primary saw long lines, fewer polling places, a shortage of poll workers and thousands of ballots mailed days after the election.

Second WI win for election integrity.

Another win for election integrity, in Indiana!

INDIANAPOLIS — A federal appeals court has rejected a lawsuit that aimed to make mail-in ballots available to all Indiana voters for the November election because of the coronavirus pandemic, ruling that the limits included in state law don’t violate voters' constitutional rights.

The record number of Indiana residents voting by mail this fall were warned to return their ballots in time to meet a noon Election Day deadline to be counted as a judge in a separate lawsuit put an extension she had ordered on hold.

A three-judge panel of 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday upheld a judge’s August ruling that state officials had discretion in how to allow mail voting and that voters not wanting to cast ballots on Election Day could go to early voting sites for nearly a month before then.

The court recognizes the difficulties that might accompany in-person voting during this time,” the ruling said. “But Indiana’s absentee-voting laws are not to blame. It’s the pandemic, not the State, that might affect Plaintiffs’ determination to cast a ballot.”

So this is happening here in SoCal: https://laist.com/2020/10/12/fake-ballot-boxes-churches-los-angeles-orange-ventura-counties-california-gop.php

It's not the harvesting of the votes that is the issue (though the law states the person casting the ballot has to sign it over to an individual, who then has to deliver it within 72 hours, apparently the state isn't overly concerned about the person being a specific person) -- it is that setting up unofficial ballot collection boxes is against the law. It would be one thing if there was a person sitting there with the box, saying hey, I will collect your ballot for you and deliver it to the state. Fine, that's the law for better or worse. It's that the boxes are unattended and pretending to be official dropboxes. This is not good, no matter which party you support. Honestly it's likely to work against the GOP in CA so you wonder why they even did it.

Which makes you wonder why the GOP would want to open themselves up to that. It's a crime so wth?

I'm told laws and enforcement of them are voter suppression, fascism, systemic racism, etc.

GOP probably figure since election integrity in that state doesn't matter, they might as well show how much of a joke it is.

Not long now til I'm officially no longer a resident of California (for voting purposes), too bad it couldn't happen before the election.

Not really a voting fraud story, but certainly a way to have your ballot thrown out.  Maybe if a majority of CA voters use this method Trump might win CA.  :)

There's nothing in that story though that says ballots were included in the mail that wasn't delivered. It says:

Quote

“Special Agents recovered several different classes of mail, including business mail, flats, and small amount of first class mail. We expect to perform a piece count of the mail tomorrow, and make arrangements to have to mail delivered to customers as soon as feasible,” the statement said.

I decided to see what else I could find on this.

Quote

The Postal Service Office of Inspector General, which is now investigating, says the abandoned bundles included several classes of mail, including one ballot application and dozens of political mailings. And the carrier is on non-duty, non-pay status, but he is just one of two now under the gun for allegedly dumping mail.

On Sunday night, agents seized eight garbage bags full of undelivered mail left out for trash pickup outside the Baldwin home off carrier Sean Troesch. The postal service said the mail was not opened and did not contain any election ballots, but neighbors say Troesch had been leaving a similar cache of trash bags out for pick up for several weeks.

https://local21news.com/news/local/caught-on-camera-pennsylvania-postal-worker-seen-dumping-mail-into-trash

So there was one ballot application dumped by another carrier, but no ballots. Troesch's load did not include any ballots. We have no idea what were in the other bags, so we can't say one way or another that this guy was interfering with the vote. Potentially the other guy was in the sense that there was an application that wasn't delivered. But that's it. I prefer not to speculate, it can lead to incorrect conclusions.
