Our K-1 Visa Interview is currently scheduled for November 3rd, but I've noticed that interviews scheduled for October have been cancelled and forced to reschedule. They currently have no news regarding future plans of reopening the American Consulate in Brazil.

My biggest concern of going ahead and rescheduling, is: what if they reopen in time for our interview?

- In case they do: what if we can't schedule the medical exam in time for the interview?

- in case they don't: we waited to reschedule and now the next available date is (most likely) after February.

Our interview will be in the consulate in Rio (RDJ), and our medical exams would be in Belo Horizonte with Dr. Juliana Barbosa Cançado. Her office said they require at least 10 days prior to the interview to be able to send the exam packet in time.

I noticed some people scheduled their medical exam to be done in Rio de Janeiro and only a day or two ahead of the interview. Can anyone that went through this process please confirm this? If we choose the medical exam to be done in Rio the same week of the interview, will they have enough time to send out the exam packet?

Sorry for SO many questions, it's just been a long process for the both of us. We appreciate any feedback.

Regards,

Rich & May

I doubt the consulate will reopen by Nov.   The covid situation in Brazil is not yet completley under control

YMMV

Consulates are scheduling out on the off-chance that they will get to open and complete interviews.  When that doesn't happen, those interviews are cancelled, and can be rescheduled into potential dates, should they be able to open.

If an interview occurs before a medical exam result is available, the visa approval will be on hold, pending medical.  Pretty common occurrence, and isn't a big deal.  Every application goes into AP anyway, so this would be one reason for that.

For many consulates it may not be a big deal.  A few don't let you in the door without the medical

Schedule and do your medical and plan on the November date /  Embassy will more than likely cancel but then you will be in the quecue before some others

if you cancel,  everyone behind you moves up a space and you wait months .  you may wait in AP and have to redo medical / that is a possibility hopefully a small one

Did Brazil conduct any interview after reopening and when did they start to reopen? Just schedule the interview for the first available date and do medicals done before interview. I believe embassy wants until they receive the result to issue visa, if approved.

The Rio Consulate has started to do K-1 and CR-1/IR-1 visa interviews, check out the consulate reviews page for Rio.  There was a K-1 interview on Sept. 14 and another on Sept. 25, so don't plan on a cancellation, be flexible and ready to go.  It takes 2-3 days minimum for the medical results to get to the consulate if you do the medical exam at one of the approved doctors in Rio before the interview, be sure to tell the doctor your interview date.  Good luck!

Here you can see how many visas were issued per month:
https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/legal/visa-law0/visa-statistics/immigrant-visa-statistics/monthly-immigrant-visa-issuances.html
Not sure it will give you the answer you need but it's a good thermometer to see how many visas are issued per month - if numbers are going up or down.
Good luck and keep us posted.
