So I'm late to the party and trying to get this done.

My husband filed and received his citizenship (N400 ) in 2016. We did not file for his 2 children due to cost at the time. Our daughter (20) has her US passport.

And our son(17) does not yet have a passport. We were going to get it earlier this year but Clovid happened...  To close the loop we were going to file the N600 for the kids this month.

I"m struggling to find the benefit for them. However, do we still file the N600 for our daughter? I believe we have all the necessary documents to file online. Just struggling to find the benefit.

Any input?

US passport is sufficient. Certificate of Citizenship is optional: https://www.uscis.gov/forms/all-forms/n-600-application-for-certificate-of-citizenship-frequently-asked-questions

I already have a U.S. passport issued by the Department of State.  Am I required to file a Form N-600 for a Certificate of Citizenship?

No. You are not required to file a Form N-600 for a Certificate of Citizenship. The Certificate of Citizenship is an optional form. A validly issued U.S. passport generally serves as evidence of your U.S. citizenship during its period of validity unless that passport has been revoked by the Department of State.

I didn't do the N600 for my younger two (at the time). I did not find any real reason to do it. If they want it they can dish out the money themselves later.

Only one person in all my years on VJ gave a good reason why the need for the N600. If something were to happen to the parent and one sibling is at war with the other and doesn't want to share the parent's certificate could it cause issues later.  I have yet to renew my kids passports, so I have not looked into if they would need my certificate to get a new passport.

Thanks for the input everyone The kids are essentially paying for the N600 out of their savings.

Also with the current political environment I just wanted to close any imagined loopholes for them.

Your certificate is not needed. They'll submit their fully-valid (10 years for those 16 and older and 5 years for children under 16), undamaged U.S. passport: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/need-passport/apply-in-person.html "Provide Evidence of U.S. Citizenship"

The certificate of US citizenship comes in handy if they ever lost their US passport, which happens so I recommend getting one.  These days it takes forever to get a citizenship certificate, for Chicago USCIS local office it's taking 10 to 14.5 months to process an N600, so a passport is definitely faster, but I suggest getting both, and put the certificate in a safe place or safety deposit box.  Good luck!
