I'm coming up to having been out of the USA for one year and I don't know if I can get back within the year. If I cannot get back in time i may lose my legal permanent resident (LPR) status. If I lose my LPR status can I in future travel to the USA as a tourist (I.e. with an ESTA) or will I have issues any time in the future trying to enter the USA?

Fin you’re not interested in permanent residency, relinquish it formally. That makes a better case for you when you transition to ESTA.

If you’re still interested in the permanent residency, you can return after even two or more years away provided the airline will allow boarding. Once you get here immigration determines whether you abandoned or not, they cannot deny you entry. All they can do is refer you to immigration court.

Just another random guy from the internet with an opinion, although usually backed by data!
