Meyer, whose story was first reported in the Victorville Daily Press, applied to become a naturalized citizen and continued with her life: raising her children and attending two local colleges to earn degrees toward her goal of working in the justice system as a forensic nurse.

so I guess she figured that's all that was needed? Fill out the paperwork and send a check and she's a citizen? Wow, if it were only that easy

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

Yes, I don't find it hard to believe that a small-town woman on the city council would be ignorant of a lot of things. I am confused about her being an LPR and not knowing. Clearly she's not in possession of a green card. Don't those need to be updated every 10 years? So that makes her illegally in the U.S. if she has just an expired green card from childhood right?

That said, this is ridiculous. She's just as American as anyone else, regardless of paperwork.

so her being illegal makes her an american now?

No, Charles, obviously that's not what I said. Her being illegal does not make her more American. Her being raised here since age 1, and the fact that she considers herself American to the point that she wanted to be part of her city council, IMO, definitely does. She also seemed to have a sense of civic duty, even if she was mistaken in exercising it.

The sad thing is that Immigration Law does not seem to allow for exactly such "deviations from the norm". Under current Immigration Law, as the original article states, she is subject to deportation. (There was a program on exactly this subject on PBS - Independent Lens. That focused on Cambodian immigrants, brought here as very young children, during the civil unrest there.)

I wonder how we would feel, if say there was a law stating that anyone convicted of a crime would be kicked out of the this country and legally barred from re-entering?

Something that struck me in the original article....this woman was brought here when she was a 1 year old. If immigration or naturalization was not a subject brought up in the home as she was growing up (we don't know her 'family' situation) chances are that as she may very well have thought that she was naturalized....therefore no need for her to do anyting once she reached majority. I agree, she is just as "American" as everyone else. Her immigration status is different from 'cultural' identification, if you will, just by the virtue of the fact that she has lived in this country almost all of her life.

Obviously she does not have current passport because that would be a small indication of what someone's current citizenship might be.....

ETA: If she does have a current passport it obviosly isn't from the USA.

Why would I need a taste? I was born American. I enjoy my right to not march around and take orders, thank you. I appreciate those who are willing to, though.

Wow, this thread is shocking.

She applied for citizenship AFTER finding out - that was also AFTER she had voted and commited her deportable felony. Good grief. She didnt' continute to break the law.

Given the number of natural-born Americans who don't have a passport, it's complete unsurprising to me that she wouldn't have occassion to cross this issue in her life. Most Americans don't have passports. And not everyone has used a birth cert for anything. Crazy but true.

Deportation really seems reasonable here? Please.

Don't we all file AOS and continue with life? What are you supposed to do while waiting? Build a shrine to the US government. She didn't vote AFTER she applied, she voted BEFORE. It just took a few years for someone to decide to 'cuff her for the felony.
