Husband (USC) and I got married when my status was about to expire after being together just under a year. We had a very small wedding with friends as witnesses  and while our families know about our relationship, they do not know we are actually married. As we approach interview, I need advice on answering the following questions.

1. If they ask why we got married so early, what will be the best answer? He proposed because  he did not want us to get separated when my status expired. Will this answer be good enough or will we get in trouble? I know marrying for immigration benefits is a red flag but how do we answer this question truthfully? We were planning to get married anyways in 2021, which is also why we haven’t told our families about the marriage yet.

2. How should we navigate questions about how much our families know? He hasn’t met my parents yet being in a different country and all, but they know off and approve of him. I have met his and they are quite cordial with me. I’m just wondering what to tell the officer when they ask about this.

3. Also, I do not have a big fancy ring (personal preference and financial constraints). Is that something that I should be concerned about for the interview?

Please help!

Well, you already know that you shouldn't get married for immigration benefits.

Immigration doesn't care about your financial choices.

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

You always answer truthfully.  Even if you got married for an "illegal reason".

You don't need a ring.  We don't have rings.

We were planning to get married anyways in 2021, which is also why we haven’t told our families about the marriage yet. Only you can answer why you got married... Most people get married because they are in love... if love wasn't your reason then answer truthfully.

2. How should we navigate questions about how much our families know? He hasn’t met my parents yet being in a different country and all, but they know off and approve of him. I have met his and they are quite cordial with me. I’m just wondering what to tell the officer when they ask about this. With honesty.. my husband hasn't met my parents yet because he hasn't traveled to (country) but they skype/FaceTime.. etc-whatever is the truth for you.

3. Also, I do not have a big fancy ring (personal preference and financial constraints). Is that something that I should be concerned about for the interview? No. A ring is not a requirement for a marriage nor does the average person have a "big fancy ring".

Please help!

It seems as if all your questions are leaning towards you being caught for committing immigration fraud... If you got married for the right reasons and not to obtain immigration benefits then you have NOTHING to worry about. Good rule of thumb in life; be truthful.
