Hello,

Hoping any Colorado folks who have gone through the driver's license process can help us out as I'm finding it very difficult to find accurate information online. My husband just received his EAD card and we'd like to get him a Colorado driver's license. We went through the application process online and got the print out for him to bring to the office. However, I'm also seeing some places online that says he'll need to take the written and driving tests. Do those need to completed before the appointment where he brings in his paperwork? He has a license from Argentina.

The first available appointments aren't until November so I definitely want to make sure we have everything we need for that appointment... I tried calling the phone line but they were not very helpful and I'm feeling more confused than ever. Thank you for your help!

  1. He'll pay applicable fee and bring EAD, SSN, and proof of Colorado address for instruction permit: https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/dmv/adult-permit
  2. He'll take and successfully pass the written test.
  3. They'll issue him an instruction permit.

Thanks! I guess the part that is confusing me is whether we need to make a separate appointment for taking the test. Because of COVID, everything is appointment-based and the new driver's license appointment is booking out several months in advance. It sounds like what you're talking about is the written test/permit vs. an appointment to get the license.

Also, will he need to hold a learner's permit for a specific amount of time or practice hours before he can get a license, even if he has a license from another country? I didn't see anything about that online, I was hoping he could take both tests and go directly to the DL.

Since he doesn't have a DL from other US state, Canada, France, Germany, South Korea, or Taiwan he'll need to pass both tests eventually: https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/dmv/new-colorado-another-country He doesn't have to minimum driving hours or hold the permit for minimum time because he isn't a minor (under 18): https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/dmv/faq-driver-license

Also: "Please note: We are not currently performing drive tests at driver license offices currently due to COVID-19. However if you need to take a drive test, we have a list of driving schools to make it easier to find a school to test at."

Finally got someone helpful on the phone! Dropping this here in case anyone else stumbles across this thread. I've added COVID annotations in italics because none of the information has been updated online and this has been the most confusing part!

Documents to bring:

EAD card

SS card

At least 2 pieces of evidence of address

Foreign passport (not sure if this is needed but we'll be bringing it just in case)

Step 1: Take the written test

COVID Guidelines: You need to make an appointment online. The appointment name is "Written Test."

Once you pass the written test, you will receive a learner's permit. Once you have the permit, you can proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Make an appointment to take the practical test.

COVID Guidelines: The DMV is not doing driving tests so you'll need to set this up with a private company.

Step 3: Take your driving test results, learners permit, and other documentation to the DMV to get the license

COVID Guidelines: You need to make an appointment for this. The appointment name is "First Time CO DL/ID/Permit."

Note: They are scheduling these several months out so I'd recommend making this at the same time as your written test appointment. The computer will block you from making both appointments but the representative told me you can add a period at the end of the name to bypass the system.
