Has anybody looked into driving your car across USA border and bringing with you?  My husband is planning on driving his across tomorrow and wondering what specific documents he needs.? I have looked on several websites. His vehicle is a Volkswagen Jetta and has the sticker under the hood that says it is similar to USA made Jettas. Anyone have any experience with this?

I’ve seen some threads on VJ!! There might be a pinned one on the first page of the Canada forum actually. I think the sticker is one of the main things, I vaguely remember reading something about a letter from the manufacturer... don’t quote me though.

Call the border I think it’s a dot form and an epa form that is required.

This link from the FAQ has a good summary of what you need. Seems unlikely that you can get everything lined up before tomorrow, since even with the EPA sticker under the hood you will still need a letter from the manufacturer stating that it complies with NHTSA standards.

I believe you can import at any customs location doesn't have to be the border.  I have heard of people driving vehicle down and importing it at a later time by going to an airport where there is CBP offices.  Most major cities with international airports will have this.

I haven't heard that, but it seems reasonable. I would recommend calling ahead to the POE to confirm that they'll allow this. I know you can't do this when moving to Canada from the US - they won't allow you to take the vehicle across the border without importing it.

Yeah you have a year to import a vehicle into the USA. The more challenging thing is having insurance. Just because you drive it down doesnt mean your Canadian insurance will cover you and you cant register the car without importing it.

K1 rescheduling has resumed after their brief pause. Looks like they're still on track to potentially finish by the end of October 🤞

YAY! So good to hear this. I was worried that they were pausing on them and that would delay them getting to the spousals. Let's hope we hear soon on ILs! :)

One thing about this process that I’m now realising is that the obsessing never ends. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I used to be obsessed with checking my emails for my NOA2, then for my NVC case number, then for DQ, then for IL... you get the picture. It got even worse this summer just waiting for things to start moving again. I had such a hard time focusing on anything else.

So anyway, I thought I’d relax once I was told I was approved, but then yesterday I was still worried about my visa not actually being issued. Now that it’s in the final processing I keep checking for the tracking number 🙃 it just drives you nuts. Well it depends on your personality type too, my husband has been pretty chill through the past 2.5 years but I’m just an obsessive person lol.

I am SO OBSESSED with checking things every few minutes as well. My husband has to get me distracted, but it's literally all I can think/talk about. This process really takes over! I guess it's a good thing I'm not the one having to interview (I'd be a nervous wreck). My husband always seems to be cool, calm, and collected. LOL

You need to make sure your car his made in North America otherwise you will have taxes on it. You need the car to be fully paid. And you need Volkswagen to send you a compliance letter mentioning that your car comply with the USA norms and regulations.

Really? You can’t owe on it? And still be making payments?

We ended up selling our VW before we moved to the US the first time because it didn't have an acceptable TPMS and the dash cluster would have needed to be changed out to get the proper TPMS put in.  It wasn't worth the headache.

Depends on who it's finance with.  If it's VW, I don't think they'll let you take it.  If it's a bank or 3rd party auto finance like TD Auto Finance, they may.  You have to get permission though.

Others have provided the other information (letter from the manufacturer, the forms you need) and the registration and insurance for each state are different.

I imported my truck, but it was financed through TD Auto Finance, had a dash that displayed both km's and mi and had a full TPMS system.  However, when I traded it in, it was a freaking nightmare because the VIN was Canadian.
