29 times the president made a nomination. 
22 of 44 presidents have had this happen. 
19 times presidents have had a nomination for a Supreme Court vacancy in a  
presidential election year while their party controlled the Senate. 
10 of those were nominated before the election. 
9 were confirmed. 
10 times presidents have had nominations for a Supreme Court vacancy in a  
presidential election year with the party's split. 
6 times the nomination came before the election. 
1 time the nominee was confirmed. 

Since 1900 the average confirmation, rejection, or withdrawal takes 25 days. 
The longest confirmation 125 days. 
The second longest 114 days 
RGB's death, Sept. 18 + 125 days = Jan. 21, 2021. 
Regardless of the election outcome, Republicans control the White House until Jan. 20, 2021

Everything is a gamble.  I heard Rush discuss this yesterday, and I admit I thought the same.  The one thing that I do agree with in holding hearings is to show the real Dems just before an election in a way the MSM cannot ignore or spin, but it would be interesting to see Mitch just take any nomination to a floor vote after everyone got the chance to review the background information.  In my opinion, the Judiciary Committee hearings are just a way Senators can grandstand for their respective bases in hopes of getting votes, nothing really happens in that committee.

Just one minor note.  The new Congress will convene on January 4th, 2021, so if the GOP does not maintain the Senate, this would be the drop dead date.  Additional concerns would be what happens in Arizona, which I have heard the winner of that special election would be seated in November 2020.

I still wonder what this impeachment threat would look like.  Maybe it is a High Crime and Misdemeanor for not following the dying wish of a SCOTUS Justice.
