Question regarding different first name on birth certificate than passport

 Share

So I have just realized my birth certificate has my first name as "Anne Brown" for example and my current first name has been changed to "Susan Brown". I don't have any attested documents of this change but my baptismal certificate has "Anne Susan Brown" and my earlier passports issued also has "Anne Brown" but as of now all new certificates and passports have the new name "Susan Brown". Will this be an issue at any point? I'm not able to change my birth certificate since it's done in India.

This can be an issue.   The passport should always match the birth certificate. If your citizenship is Indian I'd get a new passport if I could.  If you have a different citizenship it could be chalked up to an error in translation.  Is there a reason it changed between passports?

You have to disclose "Susan Brown" as another name used on the USCIS and DS--260 paperwork.

My parents changed my name within a year because they didn't like it. I do have a new passport with my new name which is now "Susan Brown". I have around 3 passports using my new name "Susan Brown"

How were you able to get the first passport with a name that does not match the name on your birth certificate?  Did you present a legal name change document at that time?

I don't know Indian passport application requirements, but where I'm from, we cannot get a passport with a name different from our birth certificate, unless we present a name change document such as marriage certificate or court order.

How did your parents change your name?

What documents did you use to show the new changed name to get your passport in the new name?

Are you three petitioner, or the beneficiary?

Your baptismal certificate might have been an acceptable document to get your passport, it used to be like that in Canada.  If no other documents show the link between your first names, I would make sure to include it with a short explanation, and if possible, other records (school, medical, etc.) showing you have been living under Susan.  Start by reading this:

https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/Visa-Reciprocity-and-Civil-Documents-by-Country/India.html

* Someone else in India can request documents on your behalf.

* Parents, or others, can write affidavits, etc.  The site does list options on how to prepare yourself + where to request assistance.

Sorry for not giving enough detail. So here's the situation, I have my birth certificate with the name "ANNE Brown" issued in 1997. In a year my parents decide to change my name. So I've got my 1997 passport with my initial name "ANNE Brown". Name changes to "SUSAN Brown" in 1998 and so I am issued a new passport with the new name "SUSAN Brown" and in that passport which is now expired, on the last page I've got a stamp from the Consulate General of India which says "The holder previously travelled on PP number A123456 issued at _____ on 12/12/12 which is cancelled and returned as it contains visa. This passport is issued due to change in appearance/NAME OF HOLDER - She was previously known as ANNE Brown".

There is technically no way for me to "fix" my passport I believe as the name isn't an error. My parents just decided to change it within a year of my birth. All my passports and all other legal documents have my correct name. It's just my birth certificate that has a different first name. I also have my baptismal certificate that says my name as "ANNE SUSAN Brown".

I hope this is clearer? So is this a good enough proof to show evidence for an official name change?

I'm not sure how your parents did the name change. Maybe there is something like some States have here that you have a certain amount of time to make changes to the child's BC. If that is the case an updated birth certificate may be what you need. I tried to google but I'm not having much luck.
