So did anyone think that limiting the search time was the solution for sure? I can also put the dates in bigger font or something to emphasize when the threads were last active.

I think it'd be great if you used red for the dates if they are older than 3 months old.

With regard to #2 I like the idea of restricting the search period. One month back is more than adequate for FAQs, maybe a bit more - say 3 months - for rarer topics. Perhaps best would be a combination of limited search period and limited number of posts to be reported for the search. This way we could go back far enough to find something for infrequent issues but not be overwhelmed with hits on frequent issues.

I like the idea of a different color for the date such as red if if is older then 4-6 months. I just did a very specific search the other day for NY drivers license - some of the posts were over a year old - but in that particular search the age didn't matter
