Moving to the US - underacknowledged?

How often does it occur when people think they can get married in one month and then move to the US on the next?

 

Or how often does people think they can move to the US within a week?

 

It's like I'm starting to question the education system of poorly implementing the info of these proper procedure of moving to the US - even the same to the other country of their system? I've heard in the past that a lot of people close by did spoke about just moving to one country or back and so every one of them did not mention the visa system or such as. Are we misleading people by not mentioning it from the past? In my High School they did not mention that we have an immigration and visa in place here in the USA.

 

Just a thought. It boggles my mind, and I hope to hear back from a lot of you and share the story so maybe we can do something to help for the better in the future.

Huh? Not sure what is your post about - the Americans not being aware of the existence of the requirements for foreigners to legally immigrate to the country? It's not just a US thing

The reason is because there is no education system about immigration that I'm aware of. It's not taught in public schools and it's rarely discussed as a topic of "small talk" unless you happen to know someone who went through the process. I'm not sure it needs to be taught in high school, but maybe if our media focused more on discussing what the actual laws are instead of just throwing buzzwords and outrage around for clicks/views, that might be a start.

 

Frankly, it boggles my mind that "immigration" has been a huge hot topic in the media for years now and yet, it's rare that they actually discuss what the laws are. Instead it's usually just two angry people from either side of the politically spectrum yelling at each other. That might be where part of the problem is.

It's true that it is not just a US thing, but the US is somewhat famous for immigration ("country of immigrants"), so it's fair to assume the process would be more known here compared to other countries. Clearly that is not the case however. A lot of Americans learn about Ellis Island in high school, and I think many people just assume that it still works similar to that - you basically just show up, complete some minor proccedures and you become a citizen.

Maybe it still works like that and we just make it more complicated than it is. I just imagine an old IO still sitting there every day in his office at Ellis Island waiting for somebody to show up but nobody does 😂😂

Lol, I think it's a museum now so he's probably a only a historical reenactor.

I know nothing objective about the US educational system, so can't really tell. On the other hand, it would quite surprise me that in classes such as Civics (if those exist here) nothing pertaining to the rights and privileges of US citizens, including the border security organizational principles, would be mentioned.

I have no detailed knowledge about immigration policies or requirements for my home country. Most people have no interest in or reason to understand how immigration works to come to the US unless they are involved in one way or another. When I was in college in the UK, both US and UK students I met there also didn't seem to even understand that many people needed a Visa to be in the UK or to visit the US bc they don't have those issues with their own passports. It was so difficult for many students from the EU as well to understand that many of us from non UK, US countries couldn't just get up and travel to a EU country for a weekend trip because we needed visas!

Most countries never talk about their immigration systems.  I had no idea about Canada's immigration or the USA until it became time to learn about it.  People should know there ARE immigration laws, but beyond that until you need to know, the information is freely available but rarely taken advantage of.

In all honesty, look more towards mainstrem media/social media. 90 Day fiance and all that s**t. 

 

I too, wasn't aware of the legal immigration process into the UK until I started my K1 process and then looked in to it, legal immigration is not something the vast majority of citizens look into unless they have a reason to. 

 

 

When you speak with people from college/university/school who move, they don't tell you the whole story, they sell you the story they want people to know "Oh I went to Canada" "I worked in Australia for a year" or "I went to the USA for 12 months to live". There's never the whole thing of, "6 months ago I submitted my application to work, now I'm waiting for an embassy thing". It doesn't sound the same, smash that in with the horrible media system in the world with clueless jounrliasts just wordvomitting anything that they think will sell, and here we are!  

 

I personally wouldn't say underacknowledges, but people are unaware of our situation. If people ask, I always speak to them about it, how (personally) other than the abysmal communication, this whole process K1 > Greencard. Isn't that terrible, but it could be so much better. But it sure isn't easy!
