What were you doing 19 years ago?

As the years fly by as lot of folks don't always remember what happened in the past.  Here is what I was doing.

 

Driving between cities in MI, I was listening to a conference call on my cell phone, and it ended around 8:50am so I switched on the radio to the popular local morning show just after the first plane hit.  It took a minute to understand what their excitement was about, and at that brief time they thought it might have been an accident.  Of course 13 minutes later, the second plane hit, and it became clearer and clearer.  I continued on to my meeting just a little late, but it seemed obvious something big was happening.  After that, I drove to the fire hall to watch the news because at that time, I was on the department and no one knew what was going on.

I was at work in the UK, I was technical support for TV, VCR etc

It took a while to realize that what I was seeing wasn't a film or TV program.

The whole office stopped working and we were just stood around watching in utter horror.

For me, catching as it happened was truly weird. I was in living in Hawaii at the time, and had just started week of vacation.  I rarely ever watched TV even then, though we did still have cable service.  Something caused me to not only wake up to go to the bathroom, but to go downstairs for some reason (we had a full bath upstairs and a half bath downstairs) and turn on the TV.  I think it was around 2:50 a.m. when I flipped on the news and I sat there stunned as they were covering the first plane's info, when suddenly the second plane also hit.  

 

My wife was awakened by the lack of my presence just after the second plane hit the tower, and as she walked down the stairs into the living room, she could see me on the couch, but not the TV.  She asked me why I was crying, and I looked at her and said I wasn't.  But she said, "Then why are tears running down your face?"   Then she joined me and watched the rest of it unfold.  Of course, we were both crying by the time we turned the TV off and tried to go back to bed.

I had just gotten back from a week in NYC that late that sunday night and was supposed to head back out to the east cost later that week.  Back then I tended to sleep with the TV on.  For some reason I fell asleep watching  NYC TV monday night.  I woke up watching live TV from New York just after the first plane hit.  That afternoon we took over all of our network surveillance  into my small testbed center in rural Arizona as my western and eastern operation centers  were both in areas that were threatened. We had two clients based in WTC that lost significant staff members.

I was flying from Columbus Ohio to Atlanta, we were rerouted to Huntsville Al and stranded for 4 days

I had already joined the Marines in the Delayed Entry Program on July 1st. But on this day I was in guitar class waiting for it to end.
