Call from DHS, regarding the validity of my marriage.

Hello,

My wife and I received a call the other day from DHS asking if we still lived together, if we were still at the same address from when we filed etc which we felt was fairly standard of them to ask. However, one question stood out, the officer asked “is there any reason why anyone might think you’re not together anymore?” Now this could just be a question they have to ask, might be designed to make people trip up, but it does make me anxious that maybe they feel something’s amiss between my wife and I.

Has this happened to anyone else and if so what happened next? Or is this nothing to worry about and just a formality?

Thank you so much.

Nowadays the biggest worry about getting a call from DHS is that it may be a scammer spoofing a DHS number. Did they ask you for (or did you provide) any personal information that they should have already had on file?

They did yeah, they had some photos we had submitted which they could describe in great depth... also they seemed to know about my wife traveling out the country without me. They didn’t ask for any social security info etc, it all seemed fairly legitimate to be honest.

Thank you so much.

I have heard of them making a personal visit and do this. I suspect with the COVID thing going on, they are doing it by phone.  I suspect the reason they asked you "is there any reason why anyone might think you’re not together anymore" is as you suspected to see what you would say.

And I am sure it is purely a random call and they probably check in on a few application per month or week at random.

If you feel it was legitimate and you didn't give any personal information, then it's probably nothing to worry about. It's not common for them to call, but it does happen. You could always call the number on their website to confirm that they actually called if anything seems suspicious.
