Hi guys,

I've been in the US on a CR1 visa for a month now and when I filed the DS-260 I requested that the DHS apply for a SSN on my behalf. Unfortunately I haven't received it yet and I was wondering if other people where in the same case.

I contacted the SSA near me and they're going to get back to me for an appointment.

Based on what I have read it is really hit or miss.   I think the general guideline is to wait 2 weeks, then contact SSA.

Hello Nérispaghetti,

Exactly in the same situation... been here for almost a month now. We have just called the Social Security office and they simply don't know who I am.

My local office is shut because of Covid. Arfffff !

When you called them, did they have you in file ?

Take care,

Alix

I was able to ring the local SSA office. They did some basic verification and saw me in the system.

I received the actual card within 6 days of entry.

Google works!  We tried one office, told to wait.   Went to another office the next day and they took the SS5 and got the card a week later.

Hi,

I'm in the same boat as you! I entered the US Aug 27th and am yet to receive my SSN. What I didn’t realise until now is how hard it is to do anything without one! I called social security customer service and the lady I spoke to was totally clueless about spouse visas and kept repeating to me I needed to check with homeland security as to whether I am permitted to work at all! She gave me the number for my local office but as with much of the world right now, it is closed due to COVID. I do intend on ringing them tomorrow but I am also quite annoyed about the fact that I requested a SSN that should have been generated by the system and have to either go through the trouble of doing it myself or going without basic things such as a drivers license! I am in the fortunate position of not having to work right away, but in a couple of months my international drivers license won’t be valid anymore and I can’t get a US license with a SSN 😩

I was the same guys (arrived in Sept). Waited for three weeks and nothing so called my local SSN office. They checked the system and I was not on it so they managed to book me an in-person appointment (I'm in LA) and I just went this morning to submit a paper application with my documents. They said I would have it in two weeks. Fingers crossed.

p.s. the first time I called my local office - I got a rep that said sorry can't help just wait so I would recommend that people keep ringing until they get through to someone useful and nice enough to help!
