No, smaller. The land was purchased by the town and the town said it would never be allowed to be developed. Fast forward 35 or so years, it got rezoned and now there's a strip mall there.

Is it rural or urban greenbelt?

Personally I don't see a problem with using urban greenbelt areas for residential property development. Not sure about New Jersey - but both the UK has a distinct shortage of affordable housing.

Affordable housing? You've got to be kidding me. All the development in these parts has been big box retailers and overpriced condos.

There's a difference between not developing on land and designating land as wildlife preserve. Also, there usually is a process where residents can challenge the rezoning. I'm not defending their actions, but since you offered it up as an example of over-reaching government, I think there is more to it than simply the government taking land.

No doubt. But these are hardly 'anti-big business' ventures. If they were - likely we'd see a succession of tenements tower blocks springing up...

Steven - can you envision a government so large and so powerful and so unconcerned with being 'fair' in its land dealings that it comes to resemble a feudal power?

You have that today in the State of New Jersey. They're in bed with private developers and eminent domain anything they damn well please for the most dubious reasons. And SCOTUS let them. Our government, at all level, is a huge infringement on our rights - and I don't mean just our property rights.

Sure...when you let outside interests shape policy. The government should serve the people - not corporate lobbyists. When I talk about public land - I'm thinking about places like the Alaskan Wilderness. We need to preserve places like that.

Yes, Steven. That's what I'm talking about too! The town I am in had land that was set aside at one point as protected land. Green space, deer, all that. Then a new mayor was elected (Dem, like all his predecessors) and he turned around and rezoned it and handed it over to a developer.

plenty of Ds are on the dole, too. Imminent domain is BS.

Your absence runs through me like a needle

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I think I would have preferred to live in the woods, rather than deal with the hassle & harrassment we received from our ex-landlady.
