I'm currently in the U.S. with a TN visa (Mexican citizen and ~3 years of valid status due to employment) along with my wife (TD visa with ~ 1 year of valid status). We are planning a trip to Mexico at the end of the year. By that time, the visa stamp in our passports will have expired.  Since it seems highly unlikely to get an interview to renovate our visas while we are outside, we are thinking about re-entering using automatic visa revalidation. Is there anything that we should look out for? We are particularly concerned about the airline not allowing us to board or CBP turning us down due to not being familiar with this process.

Visa issuance is still occurring. In July, 333 TN visas were issued to Mexican nationals. You can submit the DS-160 applications before departing the US.
