Response overheard years ago, when a white guy told a blackguy that he (white guy) wanted to be black:  "You either, or you ain't!"  (I interpreted this to mean, "Either you're black, or you're not" -- seems to make sense in the context of this thread.)

Well, she uses them interchangeably for herself. Her mom is Afro-Caribbean I know (St. Kitts) but dunno about her dad.

See, I have a problem with that.  My family came from a different country just two generations ago.  I don't try to play the "false identity" game.  I was born in America, I am an American.  My skin color is white.  It's really that simple.

 

People who claim to be African-American, but have never even visited Africa, or whom have no family there, are just trying to glorify their heritage, IMO.  I know a handful of ACTUAL African-Americans, and they feel the same way that I do.

 

Back skin does not equal African-American.

 

(I know you are just trying to be polite and not ruffle any feathers, so this is not against you, but the trend in general)
