For a country with a very low COVID death count why is the embassy In haiti still closed. There was more people killed by the flood last week than the 6 months of COVID. Sorry for the cruel example

First off there have been over 200 confirmed deaths in Haiti due to Covid and 30 something died from the tropical storm. You know there is a whole lot more Covid deaths because most people aren’t going to a hospital. Secondly Haiti’s been off and on with reduced staffing due to the ongoing unrest in the country that seems to be going on for years. I get embassy alerts basically every other day about the unrest in the country. I feel that’s what’s going to keep the embassy closed longer than Covid.

it is a political calculation, the covid19 is a good pretex to block immigration to certain foreigners, and the Haitians are part of it, I will not say that the virus is not present in Haiti but one thing is certain If it had done as much damage as in the other neighboring countries om would be in a real quagmire as some in doubt, we are not in a position to manage the few corpses of the victims of armed groups, I cannot imagine the Haitian state conceal thousands of corpses of people affected by covid19 as some people say. it's a pretext, the Dominican republic has had thousands of confirmed deaths, but the embassy has already started to schedule interviews, the same for other countries less undesirable than Haiti by Trump

It's unfortunate and at times discouraging..at this point there's nothing much to do other than remain positive and patient....I do not understand Haiti and its politics.

The way the unrest has been going on for months/years who knows when they will fully operate. I get messages almost daily from the embassy regarding public safety issues so I wouldn’t completely blame it on US politics.. if employees can’t get to work because Haitians are burning tires and shooting outside what are they to do?!
