Can I wait to apply for naturalization?

So right now we're undergoing the removal of conditions on my green card and it's pretty expensive 😳 I was wondering if it's ok to wait a little bit for the naturalization process or would that be a bad idea?

Because USCIS is funded by application fees.

Actually almost double.

N400 will be $1170 as of October 2, 2020

Fees are going up in October. N-400 fee is going way up.

 

Nobody is required to naturalize. But if the issue is cost, it might not be a bad idea to go sooner rather than later, if possible.

Oooof that's expensive 😳😳 but there are just way too many bills for us right now 😭 I think we'll just have to wait for at least a year to try 😟

You need to follow the law and do whatever is necessary

So this is the right way. Not shortcut when is about law and more about imigration.

Wouldn’t you be out of status in that case?  If you have a conditional green card you can’t have been a GC holder for 3 years.  If you’re out of status you can’t apply for citizenship.

I'm not out of status yet. My green card expires on September 11, 2020 and we already started the process for removal of conditions thingy. I used the uscis early filing calculator and it says we can start filing for naturalization at 6/13/2020.

There is no rush to file N-400.  Yes the fee is going up but if the money is not available now then wait for filing.  Once the ROC has completed you will have a 10 year green card which can be extended if required.  I have met people who have been green card holders for 30 years +.  Important things to consider relate to how LPR differs from citizen and if any affect you.  There are the obvious ones, but the less well known are:  estate tax rules are different, some retirement rules are different, some jobs want US Citizenship.

They are removing the conditions. They are following the law.

 

There is no requirement to apply for citizenship once one becomes eligible to do so. Once conditions are removed it'll be a 10 year green card... plenty of time to file N400 if they should choose to do so.

 

There are other reasons one may choose not to become a citizen. In my case my native UK lets me keep my British citizenship even when I became a citizen of another country. Some countries don't do this - so an applicant for US citizenship would have to decide whether they were happy to lose their existing citizenship. That's why there is no requirement to apply for US citizenship.

Not sure if you're getting confused but the person already filed Removal of Conditions. They HAVE to file RoC at the appropriate time. But there is no law that says people MUST file N400 as soon as they are eligible. People are allowed to file N400 years later even if they want to.
