COLUMBIA, S.C. - Police on Wednesday were investigating how a naked couple fell 50 feet from the roof of a downtown office building to their deaths.

The bodies were found on the road by a passing cabdriver around 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Clothing was discovered on the roof, leading authorities to suspect the man and woman, in their early 20s, may have been having sex. Their identities were not released.

"It's too early to rule out anything," Columbia police Sgt. Florence McCants said, but McCants said a preliminary investigation didn't show any sign of foul play.

This happened a block from my office. It was two 21-year-old college students, servers at a local restaurant, who climbed onto the roof from a parking garage. There would have been a beautiful view of Finlay Park and the city lights from up there because the park is terraced and drops down from street level. They might have even heard the fountain with no traffic noise at 4 a.m. The slope of the roof does not appear that steep from the ground, but it was slick from the dew. Very sad, and a tragic mistake for two young people who may have just been looking for an unusual and romantic spot away from the panhandlers, not so unusual a decision when you're 21 and invincible.

I'm certainly *not* judging anyone in the thread who did find this funny, so please don't think that...but I don't find it funny in the least. They were probably just mixin' it up a bit like we all did in our younger days (or older! ;) ) and this unfortunate accident happened.... I feel really sad about them..in the prime of their lives and whatnot... :( M.
