$160 in the context of the fees and income requirements for an IR visa doesn’t seem that much...?

plus translations, trips to bangkok which is a pain from where i live, etc

however, we are going to try get visas for a trip to UK/Europe next year so maybe year after, if green card isn't done yet, might be in a better position to try for B2. depends on the election result 2 i guess

Translation of what? This is a tourist visa. You don’t need to submit any documents. Sorry you don’t have a closer consulate.

supporting docs but they are likely to be the same as the stuff for the IR1 so i guess no big deal there. its mostly the hassle of getting to bangkok.

my point is, to apply for a B2 you have so say you have no intention of staying in the US. how can anyone claim that if they have already applied for a green card. that's why i would like to hear from someone who as done it.

There are many threads on it actually. You are correct that success depends on convincing them she’ll come back on this trip even though her long term goal is to move to the US. Most embassies don’t look at any offered documents for a tourist visa, you’d be wasting time and money translating. And no they wouldn’t be anything like what you’d need for an IR visa? IF they looked at anything they’d want things like letter from employer of continued employment etc.
