Social Security has not arrived

Hello everybody,

I entered the US on July 12, 2020. I applied for a Social Security Number while filling out form DS-260. It has been 6 weeks since I arrived and I still haven't received my social security card nor have I been issued a number. I came into my local social security field office for an in-person appointment and the agent did not want to start a new application for me as "officially" I already applied for one and they need to wait for USCIS to send them my information.

I have been contacting USCIS several times for the past three weeks and they are unable to or cannot look into my application. Therefore, if there was an issue with my application or if it is not being processed, there is no way for me to know as USCIS is not letting me know. This is a major issue as my local social security office will not make a new application for me unless I somehow get proof from USCIS that they are not or will not issue me a Social Security number.

I am so frustrated and I don't know what to do. I am seriously considering leaving the US if this continues. Without a social security number, one simply cannot do anything in this country. Has anyone went through a similar experience?

So we finally got our number issued! We basically kept calling/pestering our local social security office until they finally gave in. If you are still waiting for a social security card and if you applied for one via DS-260;

1) if it has been over 6 weeks then chances are USCIS lost it (apparently this happens quite frequently), don't wait because chances are nothing will arrive. Contacting USCIS is kind of pointless because they offer no support and/or wrong information.

2) If your local social security office keeps telling you to wait, do the opposite. If we had waited, we never would have received a social security card. Keep calling them and eventually you will reach someone who will help you.

Did you have to post your original documents to them to get the application processed? Or did they do things automatically?

Hello Leo O

I was wondering : when you first call them, did they have infos on your file or nothing.

I called them this morning (not the local office - which is closed right now) and the man did not have my name at all on his computer, there was no trace of any file under my name...

(I have been in the US for a month now)

Thanks for your help,

Alix

I have been in the US for 3 weeks now. Not that long I know but I have had multiple job interviews and they all want ssn. I called the ssa and they didn't see any info on me.  I went to the local office for a meeting and they are looking into raising a new request as long as there isn't a number assigned to me.  Frustrating as I've not been able to proceed with employment or bank accounts etc.  Currently have no way to prove my address as everything to get proof will require ssn etc.

Hi, I hope someone can help.

I entered the USA on a K1 visa on February 13th 2020 and married my husband two weeks after.

I tried to obtain a SSN before this at the local SSA but was told to wait for my SSCard to arrive and that this would happen automatically.

I applied for my adjustment of status in April which was refused due to an expired form so applied again and received NOA1s in June.

One of the forms asked about applying for an SSN as part of the application so we checked this box. We got an RFE/something similar for more tax information so supplied this and sent it off in July.

I am still waiting for Employment Authorisation and my SSN to arrive. I assumed these would come before the green card anyway so I'm not concerned about that at the moment and know there have been substantial delays. I have tried calling national and regional SSA/offices but they can't find my SSN and have told me not to apply for another one as having two is a bigger problem. What do I do? September seemed really far away at the time and we figured we would know more by then but now it's over I am getting a bit anxious.

Thanks in advance :)

USCIS will only send the SSN application to the SSA after your EAD is approved.

Did you try getting a job offer letter from the employer that was willing to hire you? If you could get one to show SSA; they might give you an emergency appointment for a ssn.

Thank you.  I did mention that to the SSA locally and we completed an SS5 to issue a new one which they said they'd do when they check their systems again and DHS. Called them today and they said they will get it issued and to call them in 3 days and it should be being processed.  That's the best they could do, but I think if I could go back I wouldn't have checked the box on the ds260 and just waited to get here and do it via the local office.

Have orientation for the job tomorrow so will see how that goes.

Same here, I did the DS-260 and checked to receive SSN, arrived June 6 and to date no card. I called SSA and was told to come to the local field office on Aug 12 where I submitted the SS-5 form and relevant documents. I have been calling regularly since then have been told a number has been generated and mailed out and when I inquire as to what can be done to investigate the problem I keep getting different answers ranging from the card is lost and speak to my mailman (who I don't know as I am a recently arrived permanent resident) to putting the wrong address on my application. I keep complaining and they are now telling me to come back to the field office and reapply again. This is crazy and the SSA needs to do better. If the USCIS can send out Green Cards and the ability to provide tracking information on their documents, then why can't SSA do the same?
