We have just learned today the upfront cost is about 6K USD in the DR through a private clinic.

We are looking into enrolling into a private health insurance plan as his government insurance doesn't help much. And our plan is very similar to yours, keep paying the insurance so there is coverage here and there just in case.

@SusieQQQ never said we were canceling insurance after surgery, we are keeping it long term as stated above.

@Juliet57  Thats good to hear! Do you currently reside in Mexico? Or did you travel there for your procedure?

Good - you might well find you need to be enrolled for a certain period before they will cover procedures like that anyway.

Sounds like it will be WAY cheaper in the DR anyway.

If you're looking into travel insurance, they usually only cover emergencies, not planned procedures. It's possible that some insurance covers planned procedures but I doubt it. Keep this in mind.

We carried annual travel health and evacuation insurance until it was up for renewal this summer.   It does not cover anything elective or preventative and only medicine that is necessary due to an emergency situation.  It did not cover anything in a country where we had temporary or permanent residence - so for us not Mexico and for Mary not the US.  It also doesn't cover anything arising from (most) previously diagnosed conditions.  In many countries you have to pay up front and file a claim.  There is also a limit to the claim amounts.  I've used in Europe for things like food poisoning and falling off of a broke step.  I had an infected insect bite in Nepal but the cost for an IV and antibiotics was less than the deductible.

Also recommend Mexico, have a friend who has just done this.

US especially as it appears OP has no means to fund the treatment would be near the bottom of my list.

Mexico is a great place for medical tourism.

Ha, before I moved here I had an ER visit for a bad bug i probably picked up on the flight over. A few hours in ER with a drip and a prescription and that was $1200. Maybe hmm ten years ago now.  I’d hate to think what an actual accident with stay would have cost.

I had an emergency appendectomy at a private clinic in Antigua.   I like to joke that it cost two chickens and a goat, but it was $17k up front.   My workplace health insurance covered part of that.

Heck of a lot cheaper than my husband’s emergency appendectomy here! Thankfully mostly covered by insurance.

Did you have any insurance or was that all out of pocket?

@Paul & Mary i was under the impression that the insurance they offer for overseas travelers covered more. That's a little disappointing.

@Jorgedig whoa! That's a heck of a bill.

I figured having insurance to at least cover basics once my fiance was here while we do AOS would help in case of any medical needs but it seems they don't cover as much as i thought

That’s normal for travel insurance, it’s very limited. It’s expected that most stuff is covered by your normal insurance and it’s there for unforeseen emergencies /occurrences while traveling.  You should be looking for example at adding your fiance to your insurance rather than travel insurance while doing AoS.

You can add him to your insurance after you get married if you're covered by an employer.

Wouldn't you need to have a SSN ?

Not needed. For example dependent categories on work visas don’t have SSNs (such as H and O visa dependents) but are certainly  covered by the principal visa holder’s insurance plan. You basically just need the qualifying relationship. You may sometimes meet a company employee who thinks you need an SSN, but you don’t, so if you meet one of those then go higher.

In my case Travel Insurance reimbursed me, the biggest cost would have been if it was worse and they needed to fly me back maybe using an Air Ambulance.

It is really more for catastrophic type incidents.  You pretty much have to pay upfront and getting reimbursed can be a pain.  The insurance "required" by the EU is better - but doesn't cover anything out of the EU zones.
