I see "middle of the road" as a facade. In a genuine sense, it might describe a lack of knowledge/wisdom or significant complexities requiring decision making outside the scope of that person's viewpoints, but most choices aren't complex, so I'm confident with the incidence of facade, it's accurate far more than it isn't. It's like when people join a political party, they wind up feeling compelled to defend it, thus the ingroup bias. When people form an identity (particularly what is clearly a social identity) and commit to something that perceptively is outside the scope of their own individual choices, they aren't making individual choices -- common sense. As a result, you see regular posturing to maintain that social identity, and the output of that is more contradicting views/statements especially stronger ones when used as a counterweight to more heavy leanings that one wants to offset to maintain that image. This is hardwired irrationality because we're inherently social creatures and thus affected by our environment. That environment brings about cognitive dissonance, which is a downward force on a person psychologically, it's something that needs to be resolved. One of those relevant methods I find common is dissembling.
