So confused as to what is best for my fiance and myself right now in the middle of this pandemic.

i havent seen him since august last year Due to flights been cancelled into New Zealand from the US In march and my two flights from New Zealand to the US In july and then august were cancelled. now on top of it all I’m expected to pay horrendous amounts for quarantine costs if I return to New Zealand which at this point I have to as I have no Visa other than an Esta. I’m totally devastated as I don’t know when I’ll see him next so we are trying now to get everything together to move on with our lives in the US however we are unsure whether to go down the K-1 route Or Marry  somewhere
Like Tahiti or Hawaii And then start the CR1 process. Can anyone here please shed some light on what would be the best right now at this time.

We are both feeling the effects Of been separated  Mentally  it’s making life each day a bigger struggle than it has to be.

We were in the same situation. I live in Florida and she in London. Our wedding was supposed to be in August which got postponed. So we still decided to keep the day special to us by traveling to Gibraltar and had our civil ceremony there. There were no quarantine rules (we went first week of August). Our families didn’t come due to their underlying health conditions. But we are still having our reception for next year (assuming Covid is controlled by then). Gibraltar is an amazing place to get married and cost wise isn’t terrible. Absolutely loved our experience and you only need to stay 1 night either before or after your ceremony date.

Welcome to the forum.

Concerning which visa to chase depends on a few things:

CR-1

-Takes about 12-18 months, may take longer due to COVID. I believe interviews are taking place at the moment.

-can work and travel immediately after arrival as your visa acts as a green card for 1 year till you receive a physical green card
-fees total about $1225 and depending on how many years married may have to do Removal of Conditions (ROC) at $760

K-1

-Faster, although at the moment no interviews happening at Consulate
-Have to apply for Advance Parole (AP), Employment Authorization Document (EAD), and Adjustment of Status (AOS) upon arrival. The fees total from petition to AOS will be $3025 and then you have Removal of Conditions (ROC) on top of this at $760.

If traveling, working, and saving money are important I would ho CR-1. If your fiance does not mind being in the USA till he gets AP and work is not important you can do K-1. AP took about 6-8 months pre-COVID. Now may be longer.

I believe Hawaii has a 14 day quarantine period so unless You both have a significant amount of time off that may not be an option. Look into the rules and regulations of flying and getting married in Tahiti if that’s your thought. Would your fiancé have to quarantine in a government facility as well; if so that may sway your decision as well.It really is a decision made by you and your fiancé and what your priorities are. If he is okay with once arriving to the US not being able to work or leave for at least 6 months then personally I would just file the k1.
No one knows what the future will bring; just expect longer wait times than last year and try to stay patient. If you (or anyone) Has a Truly strong, solid relationship, COVID isn’t going To ruin it. There haVe always been struggles With long distant/international relationships (some people have just experienced more struggles than others due to certain countries) and I realize that covid does take it to a new level Especially for those that already struggled, but if the relationship is worth it you will get through it 🙂
