URGENT: About to Send AOS Packet. Social Security Card HELP

my wife and i are about to send out K-1 AOS packet and we just got her SS card in the mail today.

Before we applied for her SS card, we got married first. We then submitted all documents her passport, birth certificate, and our marriage license and marriage certificate to the social security office.

But when we got the card today, it still shows her OLD last name, rather than my last name.

On the marriage license and certificate, her NEW LEGAL name is :Mary Jane Doe (example), but on the SS card it still shows Mary Jane Smith.

why did they do this? should i still include her SS# on the I-485? will this be a problem when i use her SS card to add her to my bank account?

1 - You should include her SSN in the I-845. Even if the SSN still has her maiden name.
2 - She can change her name in the SS card. Maybe was the name provided in the form she request it? https://faq.ssa.gov/en-us/Topic/article/KA-01981
3 - You probably will be able to add her on your bank account, taking the marriage certificate. It will depend on the bank.
Good luck!

this makes no sense, i already included the marriage license and certificate when she applied for the SS card. i even wrote on the SS application that she wants my last name on her card.

They produce the SSN with the name that is on the save database, which is the name that was in the visa she used to enter the US (name on the I-94). They have to do a manual verification with DHS, and if they use the married name, the verification won't find her in the system.

By their guidelines, however, you should be able to request a new one with the married name, but most offices will say that they need an immigration document with the new name first before updating the SSC, which is wrong. It's a hit or miss.

SSN is for life, it doesn't matter if you change your name. So she will apply for AOS with the new name, and write down the SSN in the form. She can also tick the box to request a new SSN, and she will receive an updated SSC with the new name after EAD is approved.

Having a card with your old name on it doesn't matter for AOS (and the general recommendation is that K-1s should try to get an SSN before getting married, so it would have to be).

Having a mismatch between the card and your EAD or Green Card might be a problem in some other contexts, like applying for a driver's license (my wife needed to get a new card before she could get a learner's permit here in CA), but at that point you should be able to get a new card.
