The mail in vote thing

Smart people help me out here. Do they really think they can mail out unsolicited ballots to everyone on the register of voters and there will not be massive fraud? 

 

Also if you want to vote by mail, why dont you just request an absentee ballot?

Washington state hasn't had an issue through several election cycles. I have no interest in trying to remember each cycle to request a ballot.

Yes, Washington has been doing this for some time.  Did they have any issues when they first implemented this method?  It appears that even the experts in Washington State are not confident this can be implemented across the board in every state/locality without issues.  As to requesting a ballot, isn't that the responsibility of the voter?  I mean it just seems that voters should take voting seriously including educating themselves and requesting a ballot.

Just curious, could this universal mail-in voting thing (not to be confused with absentee voting) be taken over like someone filing someone else's taxes before the actual person?  What I mean is could an outside actor stuff the mailboxes with fraudulent ballots based on registered voter roles as soon as voting opens to get in ahead of the actual real voters?  If so, how would the various states and locales police this?

I've been voting by mail for years here in California, and only once had an issue that was linked to when I moved and re-registered. The county registrar got my name wrong (my maiden name is two words -- think "van X" or "de Y") and it got mushed into one word when I got my ballot (it became "vanX" or "deY") . I was worried that it would cause a problem and I had to go to the registrar to fix it. Not a big deal.

 

I am registered as a permanent vote by mail voter -- you just tick a box and you get a ballot for every election, large and small, along with lots of voting materials to help you figure out what the candidates and propositions are about. I research the issues and candidates thoroughly before filling in the bubbles, and I drop my ballot off at one of many collection points. These are all manned by poll workers. I put on my "I voted" sticker and leave. Easy. I could mail it but for me, dropping it off has always made me feel more secure. 

 

We have bar codes on our ballots now and you can track them as they pass through the system. A website allows you to check the status of your ballot and whether there has been a problem. I think the tracking is new this year. There is also signature matching. It works well here -- for over 40 years, a registered voter has not had to have a "reason" for voting by mail. Yes, the counts are slower here, but that's a feature, not a bug. I would prefer that the state take its time with something so important.

About 4 years ago I got  a mail from county elections noting that my signature did not match with past years signatures. My ballot was "on hold" until I provided a new signature by mail. It was my ballot and it was easy to send in my replacement signature to make my vote bonafide.

 

The point is there are efficient, automated effective systems watching for anomalies in ballots.

 

Now, I need to go and get my snacks to get ready for Eric Trump, riveting TV : eye roll

How was it??? I just got back from a socially-distanced drink/snacks in the park. We had salami, cambozola, some gooey French cheese, crackers, a few cookies and some rose spritzers. And we talked a little politics, including chat about how we thought this was supposed to be an uplifting, positive convention but as my friend said, half the time she expected this to start playing
