One thing I’ve learned about this process is the average American has absolutely no idea how immigration works at all. I admit too, I didn’t have the best understanding either.

A few of my faves:

“Why can’t you just marry your fiancé and he come here right away?”
“Why can’t he just fly to the US to come see you?”

“Isn’t he a citizen the second he gets married to you?”

”If you hire a lawyer, they could get him here faster”

“You know that he had to live with you and you have to pay for him for 10 years if you get divorced right?

🥴😒

I have seen/heard the lawyer/immigration service one often.  The sad thing about that is the lawyers and visa service companies actually promote this themselves to take advantage of the people that don’t educate themselves.

I will admit when we started this journey I was also somewhat ignorant.  I had some exposure to employment based visas, but nothing on the family side.  I also thought hey, it will be easy for my then girlfriend to get a visitor visa and come and visit, but after two denials even with relatively strong ties, we took the K1 route and I started my education.

People whom filed for their spousal or K1 visa 10 years ago don't even realize all the new changes or how it works now either. I've met several people whom went through the process 10 years ago and can't understand why my husband isn't here yet? I mean they just filled out the paperwork and waited 2-4 months and bingo!

Do you guys know that one scene from the office, where half the office is working miserably while Robert California took the other half out for fun? And then Kelly screams "I CANT DO THIS ANYMORE!" And cries every once in a while? And no one says anything cause they are all miserable and they just continue their work?

I feel like that these days :((((

I always assumed it was a headache and an expensive and long winded process as everyone would be doing it otherwise... and I was right.

I have had some work colleagues who originate from the Philippines ask why my spousal visa is taking so long as apparently it's known to be quick and easy to them. They all know someone who had made the move. If that was the case... I would already be there, and I am from a low risk country. I can't complain as it is moving along nicely but it's interesting what different cultures/people think of the immigration process.

My husband ( the USC ) to this day is still puzzled about everything that needs to be done and all the hurdles to overcome in order for me to live a normal life here. He also thought it would be even easier for me to visit the US because of being in a relationship with him and was quite surprised when I told him that in fact that worsen the chances to be let in.

I think the Border Control shows on TV highlights what CBP officers do and what they look out for. I always enjoyed watching stuff like that. I always know to declare any foods etc. It's a snippet into the whole immigration process... And then you have shows like the 90 day fiance....

For a country of immigrants, Americans are dreadfully ignorant of anything related to immigration process other than "tHoSe DaMn IlLeGaLs". I recall one time that I had to explain to my acquaintance and his family that you don't just become a citizen or even a permanent residents just because you were here over a decade...I also had to explain my best friend about incredibly bureaucratic nature of American immigration, and it made him understand why a good portion legal immigrants are in favor of President Trump. This is a stark contrast to Australia, where things are much more straightforward and non-immigrants are a little more informed.

Not sure about this. My best friend here in Peru is Australian and married to a Peruvian ....he claims it is a miserable process every single time he travels there; this conversation between him and I started with a show I was watching on Tubi about border crossings in Australia....and believe me, it didn't seem very straight forward at all.

I didn’t insinuate that. I merely pointed out more points that the average citizen doesn’t realize about immigration...

My apologies that I misinterpreted.

Just yesterday, my colleague was complaining how DACA children don't want to integrate but get free stuff, and why they can't just apply for citizenship. When I asked if he really wants to know, he pretended to not hear it. Lost quite a respect for him, but it doesn't matter much because I don't consider him a close friend or anyhting. Ironically, he seems to hate news media ~~** news~~ but only listen to rightwing garbage like fox news that spits out (removed) like "immigratns don't want to integrate".
