Already submitted package but just realize my husband's passport is expiring soon.. long waiting time for renewal, should I be concerned?

Hi - We submitted our AOS package (i-130, i-485, i-765, i-131) last month and got notification of acceptance recently. We also got a notice for i-693 which we will get done soon.

However, my husband's passport is expiring September 3, 2020 and we saw that the waiting times for US passport renewal is pretty long, they are still working on April/May renewal applications and are fulfilling about 25% of each month's total applications.

We are worried that the passport renewal will take long and might affect us when it comes to the time we receive a interview notice and any RFE. Should I be concerned and how should I prepare? Would it be an issue explaining it to the office?

Thank you!

Is your husband the American? If so he doesn’t need a valid passport - it won’t matter it’s expiring. If you do plan on renewing it however I suggest you do so ASAP - the longer you wait the longer it takes for you to receive it.

Yes - he is a US citizen. Oh, it won't affect his i-130 that he submitted? If so, then I will tell him that it is OK to renew it now. Chances are if we renew it now, we won't receive it for a few months due to the waiting times right now.

Yeah not needed. If he needs any proof of his citizenship during the time the passport is being renewed he has his birth certificate anyway. Start thepassport application and mail it in 🙂

Yeah I was never asked for my passport, or birth certificate at the interview. I just used my state driver's license lol.  All the us citizen needs is a photo ID because you mailed in copies of his birth certificate. They may ask to see the original but in my experience they did not.
