Rules After Visa Activation ?

This is more of a “what if” type question.  Let’s say that my family has to delay their relocation to the US beyond the 6 month grace period allowed on the visa following completion of the embassy interview.  What are the rules regarding making a trip to the US for a couple of weeks to activate the visa and then returning to the UK for personal reasons - how long are you allowed to return to the UK for before there would be a problem returning to the US ?

Wgat visa type? Immigrant visas permit you to do exactly that but K-1/K-2 visas, for example,  do not.

It would be full IR-1 visas for relatives of a US Citizen.

IR1 is specifically an immigrant visa for the spouse of a USC who has been married for 2 or more years.
