My cousin asked 5k for his eyeglass. He said its for the lens and frames. Is that around how they priced eyeglass in the philippines?

We paid 4500php for frames,  progressive lenses and exam for my mil.  You can pay more or less depending on the frames you choose and severity of your prescription.

Eyeglasses wearer here! I usually pay 5k for eyeglasses in the optical shops, for frames that are not pricey (usually the optical shop has an in-house brand which would be the cheaper ones  - I get those), but the lenses are more expensive because my eye grade is quite high so the lenses have to be ultra-thin and with UV/blue light filters and all that jazz.

If in-house brand frames and low eye grade prescription, those would range around 1k to 3k.

It's really amazing that glasses cost more than a half months salary over there. It's like if glasses cost 2500 usd in the USA.

First pair of glasses I got in the states were $350. Now I order from a site called eyebuydirect and they're like $30. Good quality too.

That reasonable, he could probably get them a tad cheaper around 3 to 4k if he wanted.

If they know a kano is buying the glasses they will try to sell you some designer brand frame for like 15k.

I wouldn't get bent out of shape if request was for 5K.

My only suggestion is its not so much on pricing as there are a wide range of frames and lenses available to make something "relatively" affordable, but the challenge can be to find a place that will conduct the eye exam correctly.

Once a year, we would arrange for all staff that wanted an eye exam to go get one at a particular place that was designated by our HR team.  The exam was paid for by the company and this was done because there are many instances where people get eye glasses or contacts that are the wrong prescription, that dont fit their eyes correctly, etc.  Unfortunately I have no idea which place or doctor they used to this but the employees were happy.

I always found doing dental work (cleanings all the way to the complicated things) was excellent and a great value especially at some places in Manila, but the eye part, was generally consistently bad.  I would do eye exams in Singapore or Hong Kong and then buy the contacts from the US and someone would bring over when they came.  Contact lenses in the Philippines are outrageously expensive and sometimes they dont have specialized contacts in stock.  Some Im sure have had good experiences on getting eye exams in Manila, etc but I would say the odds are against this from happening.

The United States is now a country obsessed with the worship of its own ignorance.  Americans are proud of not knowing things.  They have reached a point where ignorance, is an actual virtue.  To reject the advice of experts is to assert autonomy, a way for Americans to insulate their increasingly fragile egos from ever being told they're wrong about anything.  It is a new Declaration of Independence: no longer do we hold these truths to be self-evident, we hold all truths to be self-evident, even the ones that arent true.  All things are knowable and every opinion on any subject is as good as any other.  The fundamental knowledge of the average American is now so low that it has crashed through the floor of "uninformed", passed "misinformed", on the way down, and now plummeting to "aggressively wrong."

The whole eyeglass business is one big cartel worldwide where most of the industry is dominated and controlled by Luxottica.  There is some good reading and a documentary someone on this online.  The markups on eyeglasses is insane, something like 900-1200% or so.

In the Philippines, its normal to find alot of things that take up a good portion of ones salary.  Rent, mortgage, food, consumer goods etc.  Even small things like buying a bottle of shampoo can take up 60-70% of a days salary.  Its why sachets are so popular for these time of items.

We go to a place in Manila close to the Embassy and get transition bifocals and frames for about 1.8k.  I always but 2 or three pairs and do the same for my kids here.  They love them and they are dirt cheap there.  I get 3 pairs for around 5k.

I bought a pair for my niece  the last time I was in Cebu, at SM seaside. If I recall with the exam and everything they were around 4-5K(P)

I bought mine from a store in a Manila mall called EO Executive Optical. The eye exam was free, but the frame and lens were 6,000 php or $120. I went to two other eyewear shops and they had some cheaper options, but I didn't like the cheap plastic frames for 1,000 php. I wanted a metal frame. I did go to a luxury eyewear place and they took me right to the 100,000 php ($2,000) frames by Bvlgari frames. No thank you.

Yes, I've ordered glasses online before and they were much cheaper ($40 total and that included shipping) and they came from China. They lasted for about 5 years too.
