I have a question regarding this @JFH does that date normally start from the date you would have applied for AOS (in my case) or the date of actual issuance of your first 2 year GC?

Issue date on green card.  AOS just grants authorized stay.

Edit: if OP received green card through marriage he can apply based on 3 year rule, if not he has to wait 5 years.

@MichaelZungu, what is the category on your green card?

I don't believe the green card category matters with regards to the "3-year rule". If, for example, you got a green card through a work sponsorship and happened to have been married to a US citizen for 3 years while holding it, you still qualify.

The date on your green card (regardless if it is the temporary or the permanent one) at the very bottom, the one that says "Resident Since". For a GC issued due to marriage to a USC spouse the petitioner can file their N-400 (application for naturalization) 90 days before the 3-year anniversary of that date.

For example on my GC the "Resident Since" field is 11/07/2017. The three-year anniversary of that date is 11/07/2020. Ninety days before this anniversary is today, 08/09/2020.

This is correct, the rule specifies being a GC holder for 3 years (minus 90 days), being married to a person who is a US citizen (and has been for 3 years), and being married for 3 years. Doesn't matter how the original PR was received.

No worries, 90% of the time it's through marriage but it's good to be specific.

I work in tech so I see employment GC -> 3yr naturalization sometimes, once I was even the one who pointed out it was possible! The more you know!

Call USCIS at 800-375-5283 and request in-person appointment for I-551 stamp in your foreign passport:

They may or may not give you the appointment.
