SSN Not Arrived

Hi everyone,

I entered the USA on 2nd July and my SSN hasn’t arrived yet. I called up the local office and they said they don’t have any record and that I should call them back in 10 days and if there still isn’t anything, I should get an in-person appointment.

Problem is, I came back to my home country and the earliest I can go back is December. And I need the SSN to file joint taxes with my spouse for 2019 (applied for extension till October 15th) so that I can get the stimulus cheques. Which we won’t be able to get otherwise because I have an ITIN.

Any suggestions on what to do?

P.S. I also called the USCIS and they didn’t offer any help regarding whether my info has been forwarded to the SSA or not for card production.

Did you mark the box on the DS-260 requesting a SS Card?  If so, it SHOULD arrive automatically.  If not, you have no option...other than to make an in-person appointment.....

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Yup, I did mark the DS-260 requesting a SS card. Still nothing though. Which is why the concern.

You can try to get an appointment at the US Consulate/Embassy closest to you, but that probably will not be an option right now.

Best option now is to just get it in December when you get back.  Technically you are not supposed to have an ITIN as a GC holder, so you actually can't file with an ITIN.

Yea, the embassy and consulate are closed.

Really? I didn't know that I couldn't file with an ITIN. So what if the card doesn't arrive before the filing deadline?

Under what basis do you qualify for the stimulus?

Do you mean I am not eligible for the payment anyways?

I thought the stimulus is for 2020 and just based off of the 2019 return.

Were you a resident alien in 2019?  Non-Resident aliens do not qualify.

The income of my spouse and I is below the threshold for the stimulus. And it says that US citizens living abroad also qualify. So even if I don't qualify, my wife does. But currently, since our last tax return was filed with my ITIN and her SSN, she also becomes ineligible for the payment.

Hmm, I understand that if I am a nonresident alien, I do not qualify. However, I don't get the 2019 bit, there is no year specified on the IRS page. Or maybe I am just missing it.

Because the stimulus is tied to your tax status for 2019.

Since I already have a green card, when I file my 2019 tax, my status will be that of a resident alien. For which I need my SSN to arrive before the October 15th deadline to file with it.

Given these circumstances, is there anything I can do to make sure the SSN arrives ASAP?

I don't see it say anywhere that it makes me ineligible. So I am not entirely sure.

Regardless, is there anything I can do to expedite the delivery of the SSN while being in my home country?
