Just don't let him take you to Gad for shawarma. Gad-damn that place makes awful shawarma! :D

:lol::lol:

Where is this place anyways? I still don't know where we're staying. He's going there Monday to find a place so I'll know after that hopefully. I did find an AWESOME appt complex called Alexandria Apartments but when they wrote me back turns out they're in Australia  Which I guess makes sense since peak season for them was in December, not July.

Gad is a fast food style restaurant so they're everywhere like McDees. Avoid this place.

I don't remember exactly where Green Plaza is but it's a mall. The shopping isn't good but the one restaurant on the ground floor has decent food. I don't know what the restaurant is called though. It's pretty big and it's in the middle of the plaza on the ground floor. When I went it appeared to be under a tent.

Alex is great. I love it there! I never stayed in Alex but we didn't spend a lot of time there on both visits. The beach is beautiful at night. We didn't go to any private beaches (during the day) but we did go to a public one. Public beaches in July are a nightmare. So crowded and dirty. You practically sit on top of ppl it's so crowded. We went to Mamoura beach at night and it was lovely. We also went to another beach near the Citadel at night, that was nice. I sat right at the water's edge so I could get my feet wet when the tide came in. I never did make it inside the Alex library cuz we almost always went to Alex in the evening so it was closed by the time we got there. The one time we went during the day it was closed too. The shopping is nice in Alex (just not in Green Plaza). Not as many touristy type items like Cairo has though.

The Lebanese are awesome cooks!

Doodle get your self a Sharwarma ASAP! Moody is right about the beef rather than the chicken!

Have you ever had "kutban"? I'm not sure that I'm saying that right. It's sort of like the kabob beef pieces, but it's just by themselves. It's grilled over charcols. OMG!!!!!!! It's the best thing in the WORLD!!! My favorite used to be koutlet (lamb chops), but now it's all about the kutban. Also, my mother-in-law makes this dish called "Fet". It's a rice dish that has chicken and almonds. After she's cooked the chicken all day, she uses the stock to make the gravy to pour over the rice and stuff. She's taught me to make it, but it's not nearly as good as hers!

AGH!!! I'm so hungry! I've got to run out and get some lunch. Looks like it's going to be a deli sandwich. :(

mmmm Yummy. At least we are not talking about

doughnuts

anymore. :P

That was really sweet of you to black that out for me! B)

moody - I'll have to try that place out next month then! The only meat that I ate while in Cairo was at this Iraqi restaurant in Nasser City and it was gross. It was kebab I think but it was sooooo wicked salty I couldn't eat more than one bite which bummed him out 'cause he kept saying it's sunna to finish your plate. Well I *did* finish what was on my plate but he kept piling more stuff on so is that my fault??

allousa - that's too bad about your dog. :( They become such a part of your family. I hear you on the diet...I've been on WW for a while now but I'm getting frustrated 'cause i had to go on prednisone and gained everything I lost. :crying:

mmmm Yummy. At least we are not talking about

doughnuts

anymore. :P

I had a french cruller and a chocolate frosted. :innocent:

Okay...Doodle...that was just plain mean!!!!!

I've tried the WW thing before. I lost alot of weight and then got pregnant...go figure! It's been really tought to lose the weight from that.

My husband is great to give me encouragement. I'm really working hard to get back down to the size I was when we met. I'm tired of wearing my fat clothes and I want to have more energy to do stuff with our wild little boy. He's an outside boy! Besides, my hubby gave me some incentive for when he comes home...can't tell you what that is though!

Happy Friday MENA folks!

Let me intorduce my self. My name is Zee. Born in the US, grew up in Saudi, came back to the US for college and have been here ever since :) I call my self a Ghanaian-American with a sprinkling of Arab. Anyways, I am always reading the posts here in the MENA forum so I figured I may as well introduce myself so that people are not like "Who the heck is this random person?"

Just getting ready for my vacation. I can't wait!!! My sisters and I are flying from here to Ghana and my parents are flying from Saudi to Ghana. My mom keeps asking me if I want anything from Saudi. I'm like "Yes, some shawarma would be fabulous". I miss that. My sister (who lives in IL) did find a place that actually sells authentic batatis, in the greased up brown paper bag and all  . SO GOOD!

Anyways, have a wonderful day everyone!

Zee

Welcome to MENA Zee! What part of Ghana is your family from? I spend the summer of 2004 in Ghana traveling and studying on a NEH Grant. Got to see most of the country. It is a lovely country filled with the most friendliest people I've ever met in my life.

Welcome to allousa too! (F)

My parents are both from out-of-the-way, never-been-heard-of, obscure villages in the north of Ghana. Seriously, ask any Ghanaian in the States and they have no idea what you are talking about because the places are so small. The reference point we use is Gambaga (it appears on maps so at least you have something to point to).

We went through Gambaga on the way to Bolgatanga. I think I prefer the northern part of Ghana. It's soooo different from the rest of the country. I took this picture some where near Bolgatanga. BUT it may have been on the road to Tamale not Gambaga.

i prefer chicken schwarma (if its done correctly) this lebanese place in queens where i was living in NY (kind of like little arabia) has the BEST and most moist chicken schwarma. in fact i brought one on the plane to eat for lunch yesterday!

and there's a place here in southern california called "zankou chicken" that is armenian/lebanese. best chicken schwarma also. with the best garlic sauce. ever. period. lol

THAT IS TOO COOL!!!! The picture pretty much sums up the north.

People are always asking me what the best thing to do in Ghana is and I start talking about reading by moon light (awesome) and roasting corn by the fire. And I get blank stares  and "How about the clubs? Where are the good clubs at?" I guess we all have our own definitions of fun :)

Doodle...you've never had shawarma???? It's one of my favorite foods. My son has a large birthmark on his left thigh which everyone blames on my craving shawarma during pregnancy. You gotta try it! Go for the beef shawarma not chicken, the chicken is dry IMO. Have your husband take you to eat it in Egypt. I had it at a restaurant inside Green Plaza (in Alex) and it was good. I had it a bunch of other places but the restaurant inside Green Plaza made it best. Of course it doesn't compare to the shawarma at the Lebanese restaurants here. The Lebanese are awesome cooks!

awww.. Green plaza :( I had a great Ice cream there.. and there was this Little - looked like 3 yr old - on the war path with those electric cars.. It was funny watching people chase him down.. The indoor playground is amazing.. :( I swear someof those rides would not even be legal in the states!:cry:

I am sure not that is correct. See here:

Inusah: born and raised in Ghana. Met my girl through my good friend (her cousin)

Zee: Ghanaian-American raised in Saudi Arabia (hence why I tend to lurk around the MENA forum a lot)

The person signs it Zee ... which clearly by this is a guy. I thought Zee like Zied.

Zee where are you? Are you a boy or girl? LOL

ALso ALOUSA Marhaban too (sorry forgot you)...

Also we should have a poll of NA SOs... do they know what hummous is? Mine didnt... charwarma he does know LOL!
