I grew up in the country and got chiggers everytime I would go in the woods and pick blackberrys. The best home remedy was putting clear fingernail polish on the bumps. I know that sounds weird, but from what I understand, that kills them. They have no air, so they die. And that relieves the itching.

I REALLY hate that for you. Those buggers and the itching can drive you mad AND to have an ear infection on top of that. You need some good drugs to knock your fanny out until it's all over. :(

yeah i got busy with the clear nail polish yesterday :D

i have read somewhere that such does nothing to them, but i have noted that it does relieve the itching.

For chiggers i always heard a little clorox water also but i guess depending on WHERE they are...

oooo a way to learn how to break dance, i'll have to try that

Happy Friday MENA folks!

Let me intorduce my self. My name is Zee. Born in the US, grew up in Saudi, came back to the US for college and have been here ever since :) I call my self a Ghanaian-American with a sprinkling of Arab. Anyways, I am always reading the posts here in the MENA forum so I figured I may as well introduce myself so that people are not like "Who the heck is this random person?"

Just getting ready for my vacation. I can't wait!!! My sisters and I are flying from here to Ghana and my parents are flying from Saudi to Ghana. My mom keeps asking me if I want anything from Saudi. I'm like "Yes, some shawarma would be fabulous". I miss that. My sister (who lives in IL) did find a place that actually sells authentic batatis, in the greased up brown paper bag and all . SO GOOD!

Anyways, have a wonderful day everyone!

Good morning Doodle! How are you feeling today? Got any fun plans for the weekend?

Feeling the same unfortunately. See my Rheumatologist Tuesday so we'll have "the talk" about the plaquenil. For the weekend.....kids are off to the beach with their friends in a few, then later on tonight they are in the championship game to see who the big softball winner is.:dance: Saturday is up for grabs but I'm de-cluttering my bedroom for part of it. Sunday is an ice cream celebration at the park and the kids get their trophies. Then Monday I drop them off at their fathers for a week. Don't know what I'm gonna do with myself after that but I do have about 40 CPE's to get before June 30 or my license will expire so I guess I'll be studying my butt off. (gawd I really wish you could literally study your butt off!!! :innocent: )

Doodle...you've never had shawarma???? It's one of my favorite foods. My son has a large birthmark on his left thigh which everyone blames on my craving shawarma during pregnancy. You gotta try it! Go for the beef shawarma not chicken, the chicken is dry IMO. Have your husband take you to eat it in Egypt. I had it at a restaurant inside Green Plaza (in Alex) and it was good. I had it a bunch of other places but the restaurant inside Green Plaza made it best. Of course it doesn't compare to the shawarma at the Lebanese restaurants here. The Lebanese are awesome cooks!

Welcome to MENA Zee! What part of Ghana is your family from? I spend the summer of 2004 in Ghana traveling and studying on a NEH Grant. Got to see most of the country. It is a lovely country filled with the most friendliest people I've ever met in my life.

Welcome to allousa too! (F)

Doodle - I'm sorry that you are still not feeling well. My best friend has struggled with RA for a long time and I know it's been very difficult during the times that it's really wrecking her body. She gets so frustrated at not being able to do what she wants with her kids.

Sounds like you've got a full weekend!

I've got to take one of my dogs to the vet. She's an old gal, 13 years old. She's really having elderly dog problems. I hope something can be done to help her. I'm hoping my husband will be home before I lose her. She's been with me since she was 6 months old. It will be difficult to lose her. :(

I've also set up a pool for the summer for our son and after I cut the grass tomorrow, we're going to get in and play around all afternoon! Then we're meeting a friend and her little boy at a park with a miniture train for the boys to ride on.

Oh, by the way, I received a response back from the Rome Consulate today. I had emailed them yesterday to inquire whether my husbands file had arrived yet. I figured that it probably hadn't. Jpaula (from this site) recommeneded that I email them since they are quick to respond and it will show that I'm on top of the file. Rome said the "package" system takes up to 4 weeks for stuff to be delivered. :( AGH!

I WANT MY HUSBAND HOME!!!!!!!!!!

So he can cut the grass!!! lol

I liked growing up in Saudi. It definitely is a different experience than being here in the US but nothing really crazy or out of this world. People always expect met to have some horror story about it but I don't. I do have to sympathize with my dad because he has only girls so any time we wanted to go somewhere he would have to take us. But now when he and my mom come to the states he refuses to get behind the wheel. He says that it is payment for all the times he had to schlup us every where "in the heat of the desert". Can't say I blame him  .

Have you ever had "kutban"? I'm not sure that I'm saying that right. It's sort of like the kabob beef pieces, but it's just by themselves. It's grilled over charcols. OMG!!!!!!! It's the best thing in the WORLD!!! My favorite used to be koutlet (lamb chops), but now it's all about the kutban. Also, my mother-in-law makes this dish called "Fet". It's a rice dish that has chicken and almonds. After she's cooked the chicken all day, she uses the stock to make the gravy to pour over the rice and stuff. She's taught me to make it, but it's not nearly as good as hers!

AGH!!! I'm so hungry! I've got to run out and get some lunch. Looks like it's going to be a deli sandwich. :(

moody - I'll have to try that place out next month then! The only meat that I ate while in Cairo was at this Iraqi restaurant in Nasser City and it was gross. It was kebab I think but it was sooooo wicked salty I couldn't eat more than one bite which bummed him out 'cause he kept saying it's sunna to finish your plate. Well I *did* finish what was on my plate but he kept piling more stuff on so is that my fault??

allousa - that's too bad about your dog. :( They become such a part of your family. I hear you on the diet...I've been on WW for a while now but I'm getting frustrated 'cause i had to go on prednisone and gained everything I lost. :crying:

mmmm Yummy. At least we are not talking about
