What is DS260?

Hey @AllaR

DS260 is the "online Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration Application".

It is a long questionnary (they ask all kind of questions : where you live and where you have ever lived, where you work, and where you work in the past, all your postmail addresses, all your phone numbers (if you recall them, of course), etc. etc.) that you fill out at the beginning of the Immigration process.

Have a look here https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/visa-information-resources/forms/online-immigrant-visa-forms/ds-260-faqs.html

Take care,

Also, nobody answered if we need to bring translation to interview of all documents. They were submitted online.

Hello again @AllaR :)

Usually, on the Embassy website (it was the case for the US embassy in France, so I assume it would be the case for all US embassies), you have a list of all the documents you need to bring and if a translation is needed.

At the US Embassy in Paris, they did not require an English translation of the French civil documents (birth/mariage/divorce/police certificate). You will need an English translation ONLY IF your civil documents are in another language than the country where you have your interview (don't know if I am clear, but for example, for me, as a French citizen, if for some reasons, I was living in Mexico, I would have to bring an English translation of my (French) civil documents. Because of course, the agents at the US Embassy in Mexico don't necessarely speak French).

Thanks, How long before your visa was issued?

@SETETA

for me, I got the interview on a Wednesday, the visa was issued on the next day (I heard they issue all visas one day a week - for Paris France, they issue them on Thursday), we received the passport on the next Saturday (we really did not expect it to be so quick)

Just did my interview in SA

they held on to my passport but i have to bring court records (thats what was missing in my docs) i have police cert but they need it from court as well i had no idea, now i have to go back on wednesday, i dont know if i am approved but i guess they wouldnt hold on to my passport and ask for docs if its bad news😫

I think you are going to be okay, if it was more serious, they would have denied you. Hope it goes well, let us know, of course. 🙂

Wait. I am confused. Do they need originals of what was submitted online? Do we need to print it?

Yes they ask for originals. So ALL YOUR CIVIL DOCUMENTS (birth, marriage, divorce, police certificates) must be originals and recent (like less than 6 or 3months depending on your country).

As for the documents you uploaded on the CEAC website : have originals as much as you can, but now, with digital versions of administrative documents it is hard to tell what is original and what is not. Better if you have the financial support documents as original as possible (W2, and IRS transcript (federal return transcript)).

Most embassies also accept certified copies of many documents. Check your specific embassy's website. Better to be safe.

Yes certified copies are exactly the equivalent originals (but honestly what a drag to have them certified since you need the originals to do so, right?)

I think the question from @AllaR was about originals versus copies.

This is a little silly, but now I'm worried that my husband only has our original wedding certificate and not also a certified copy - if he turned in our original cert, would we get it back or is it held onto at the consulate?

All originals are to be returned to you after your interview on the same day. They just need to verify them with the one you submitted to CEAC in the system.

From my own experience and listening other people, nobody is asking about certified copies. It needs to be translated and nothing else. I certified mine while in Russia and it was so much money and effort for nothing when nobody ever asked for it. Even all way up to my citizenship so I recommend everyone to not waste money.

Some courts for example do not give originals only certified copies. So do whatever is easier in your country.
