Heres the deal. Just purchased a brand new home in Mcallen, Texas. However I live in L.A. I'm not looking to move there. Just need some kind of info on the city. Is it a dump, safe, ghetto etc. Growth rate in first quarter was 9% I believe.

Any VJ'ers familiar with the area? Any info appreciated.

It's a very nice town, it will of course have it's bad part of town but it is a big city with lots of opportunities. The cost of living is VERY cheap there but at times it will be hard finding someone who speaks English. (I'm from Corpus Christi, 130 miles north of McAllen and I don't speak much Spanish  ) It's close to other larger cities like Brownsville and about an hour away from South Padre Island, which is BEAUTIFUL, I totally recommend it! I would say the Mexican border would be about a 45 min drive down 77, It's been a while and I usually stayed in San Benito or Brownsville when I stayed in the Valley.

Let me know if you have any other questions! :D

hot year round pretty much, winters are usually in th 60's mostly with occasional dips into the 40's but it's rare and will last a day or 2 at the most. It DID snow there a couple of christmases ago  here too, we made national headlines and I think there was a snowball for sale on ebay from Brownsville  spring time always brings in the 100+ temperatures.

Immigration problems it's hard to say, very hard to tell who's there legally and who isn't. There's a couple of checkpoints a little to the north, they check for drugs and immigration, every trip I took, which was weekly for a while, I would see someone being inspected on the side.

McAllen is part of Hurricane Alley, that's something to think about as well. It's already hurricane season until November, so far it's been quiet, almost too quiet

In Brownsville, there's a station there. I hear they do a lot of smoking in the boy's room there. Any truth to that? :D

 I was wondering if you would catch the music group and song,

1973smokin45.gif

Brownsville Station - Smokin' In The Boy's Room. It topped Billboard's Chart at #3 in 1974.

The same year Kiss released their debut LP "KISS" and "Hotter Than Hell" ;)
