I live in Ohio but really close to Michigan .. about 10 minutes. I am up in the Detroit area all the time. I agree you might want to think a lil south of Port Huron. I realize you are thinking quick crossing in Sarnia to London and all, but if you are farther south you simply cross into Windsor and take the 401 to London, no big deal.

Hey I moved from Scotland to Livingston county, Byron to be exact it is in the middle of nowhere, 50% of the roads are dirt, no fcking street lights, all the wild animals tresspassing through your property :P

unlike Glasgow Scotland where I came from, but apparently it is one of the fastest growing counties in Michigan. Why you may ask, to be with the one I love. The above things are certainly a culture shock but I will learn to live with them, sorry if I have taken this topic of course a little but I was just wondering if all recent imports ;) to Michigan have the same views.

Yeah.. Byron is kind of out there... My uncle lives in Oak Grove which is somewhat close by...

I'm definitely not one for country living, which is why I live in the city... It would be a culture shock for me

A "Michigan Left" is where you cannot make a left turn onto a divided Highway. You turn right and there is a turn around about 500 feet up the road in the median that you use to go the other way..

Actually, it is a great way to improve congestion on divided highways and results in shorter traffic light cycle times as there is no need for a left turn light and there is no chance of any vehicles getting caught in the intersection...

I'm in Michigan too :D .............AND, apparently i dont say port Huron right!!..something to do with the accent i was told

I live um south east, (Brownstown!!) with a Trenton Zip code...........go figure!!

:o:o YES & about those Michigan left turn things, wow, who ever thought up THAT idea ;)

Yep... you don't say it right until it sounds vaguely like "Porch Yurin"

 uh oh. What left turn things?

A "Michigan left turn" is where you have to make a right turn followed by almost-immediate yewie to accomplish a left turn--in many cases, the median is specifically designed to enforce this.

I'm leaving an adorable little apartment, just finished fixing it how I wanted it, a great job with huge $$ growth potential, all my childhood friends, and california - to be near my guy... so even though I'm not YET a recent import, of course I have the same view!!

:) nothing about what I am doing is as crazy as living without my husband near me.

Lately I'm just full of surprises to my family and friends. Our newest plan - when my lease is up (california) Sept 1, I'm moving to Michigan.

SOOOOOOO any Michigan folks out there? Tips? pointers?

I'm from SoCal, and I had a job that sent me to Ohio (close enough to MI) for four months. If you haven't spent much time out of Cali, you're in for a shock when it comes to the weather. That is, they have weather there. And a real winter, not the fun kind we have that we can visit up in the mountains.

Also they drive, ummm, more relaxed shall we say. I was shocked when I was back home for a visit and I was nearly run down making a left turn.

/just sayin'

Hi

I'm from Michigan and I've been to California as well. Nice weather you guys have there. I wouldn't suggest moving to Port Huron, as in previous posts they have lost one of their largest employers. You could do just as well living in metro detroit suburbs. It depends on your taste and income level. I live in Belleville which is between Detroit and Ann Arbor and it's a quaint little town, but it's at least 25 minutes on the freeway just to get to the Detroit/Windsor Bridge/Tunnel. You can get to London just as easy on the 401 as the 407 but I think the 407 is a slightly quicker way to get there but it would be more worth it to move to the suburbs. The job market is a little tight in the area due to all of the big 3 motor companies doing layoffs and cutbacks but I'm not sure what work you do or what kind of degree you have. Some places I would suggest are Ann Arbor (a little far but a nice happening little town.. lol), Royal Oak, Sterling Heights (home of the chaldeans..lol), Dearborn or Dearborn Heights, Livonia, Farmington Hills, Plymouth are all good choices.

I think that the U of M / Ohio state rivalry is even bigger than the U of M / MSU rivalry but that's just me.

Also like someone said before, pack a parka because one day it rains, one day the sun is shining, and the next day it's snowing!! However we did have a mild winter this year.

Hope this helps !
