Lately I'm just full of surprises to my family and friends. Our newest plan - when my lease is up (california) Sept 1, I'm moving to Michigan.

Gonna lift up and go... never did anything so kooky before - but my husband and I are both really liking the idea of taking *control* of this situation as much as possible. I'm looking at Port Huron, so that weekends can be spent with the hubby! (I'll be 1-1/2 hrs from him in London, Ontario).

Weeeeeeeeee. I am happy. In 4 months I will start looking for jobs & apts. 4 mos. 3 weeks, we're outta here in a UHaul. I have some fears but I'm going to play through. The thought of going 7, 8, 9 or 12 months without my newly-wed husband is making me sick. (we just re-started the visa journey me-to-canada).

Some friends are in full support, others are telling me not to do it. I notice the support friends are all those who have taken risks before (one who up and moved to New York, one who up and moved to Florida).

SOOOOOOO any Michigan folks out there? Tips? pointers?

Welcome to the Great Lakes! Michigan is a great state to live, so welcome aboard! I have lived in the midwest my whole life so I am use to most of the things here. But a few things that threw me off:

1. Having to recycle cans for 10cents

2. The Michigan U-turns

3. The rivalary between UofM ad MSU!

Might take some getting use to with the weather but at least you'll be close to your husband! Welcome!

I think I can handle 1, 2 and 3 :)

New weather, new town, new job, no place to live up front - doesn't seem as crazy as living apart... !

Plus I love the idea of living in the same time zone. WOW.

thanks for your reply!

As you know I live in the Detroit area...

WHat do you want to know.. there are lots of nice places to live, eat, have fun... Lots of things to do...

Don't know if I'd live in Port Huron though... it's not the nicest town and they just lost one of their largest employers so the job prospects there are next to nil... you'd have better luck in the housing and job end if you lived in northern Macomb County instead...

The problem around here is that the job market sucks big time right now... If you do move here, prepare to be looking for a job for quite a while... I would get a job first before you commit to moving here...

Drop me a line and I'll help you the best that I can...

This is good to know, I had been told it was a cute town with an up-and-coming artist community. Go figure. I have enough cash to sustain about 2 months (that's without hubby's help) plus I will get a "parting gift" which will amount to 3/4 of my usual annual bonus, and my boss is pretty good about giving a bit extra too. I'm selling SHEESHloads of stuff on ebay, just started last weekend, so I should be able to draw in some extra cash with that as well. Going to live as *tightly* as I can for the next 5 mos.

I'm going to register with Spherion and Kelly locally, they said they can test me down here and transfer my file there so I'll be good to go for temping asap. I don't mind commuting either.

Like I said, if you're going to do temp jobs, most of your temp jobs will be in the Detroit area... I still think you'd be better off to live along I-94 in northern Macomb County than in PH.... Better to be closer to your work commute and the gas associated with that than the slightly shorter drive to London from PH... YOu would be adding at most about 20 mins to your drive to London... but if you lived in PH, you'll probably be adding that additional 20 mins both ways 5 times a week...

Trust me... look in Chesterfield, New Baltimore, Harrison Twp, and Mt. Clemens instead of PH or Marysville. There are TONS of apartments on M-59 right next to I-94 that a lot of soldiers stay at from Selfridge.. so there are lots of prospects for short term leases.

Cool, cuz I did find a few apartments with short term leases in Harrison Twp and Chesterfield that didn't look too creepy.... and many more temp ops or temp to perm right outside detroit.
